In the Artemis Fowl series, a Shield is one of many magical capabilities.
Science
It is mentioned many times in the books that a Shield is formed when the fairy who is using it vibrates at high speed, only leaving a slight blur in the air, formed by the after-image of the fairy. In the fifth book, Foaly invents a new LEP suit which permits the user to perform Shields much better, vibrating with the fairy who uses it instead of resisting, effectively preventing any blur.
Shielding
The form of a Shield is a form of magic which allows the user to remain invisible to all who don't have specialised LEP goggles, which have the choice of anti-Shield coverings which render the Shield useless. It is mentioned that a Shield uses up magic very quickly, which means that if a fairy does not perform the Ritual for a long time, the Shield will become impossible to perform. It is unknown whether the use of the new Section Eight suit helps decrease the amount of magic it takes to Shield, therefore letting the fairy go longer without the Ritual.
