Plot

The film is based on a true story and is set primarily in Oxford during the 1950's. It focuses on C. S. Lewis (played by Anthony Hopkins), an Oxford University academic at Magdalen College and author of The Chronicles of Narnia series of children's books and many popular works on Christian belief. It tells the tragic love story of Lewis's interactions with an American divorcee named Joy Gresham (played by Debra Winger), and their brief married life before her death from cancer.

Trivia

  • During an interview for this movie, Hopkins said that, although tears could come very easily to him if he were acting, he does not cry easily in real life. He did, however, recall crying at a Lassie movie when he was young.
