A Semi-final (or Semifinal in American English) is a match in a knockout phase of a competition. It has two usages:

  1. any post regular-season match;
  2. the two knock-out matches between the Final Four teams or individuals with the winners progressing to the grand final. The losers are knocked-out, though often take part in a third place play-off.
