Personality
Sean Slater is one of the soap's most complex characters. Though on the surface highly contemptuous and manipulative, as actor Rob Kazinsky commented, "He has many hidden layers." Indeed, a softer side is evident towards younger sister Stacey, who he has assumed a very paternal role with. He is fiercely protective of his sibling, and often finds himself fighting her various boyfriends, although he does seem to have come to an understanding with her husband, Bradley Branning. His closeness with Stacey is linked to him leaving the family home following the death of their father; she had to cope with the burden of their mentally ill motherJean alone. He seems to be hiding feelings of immense guilt about what happened and thus this a contributory factor to his apparent nature. Further evidence that there is more to him than meets the eye is his kind treatment of Tanya Branning following the breakdown of her marriage. Though a character seemingly so full of hate, Rob Kazinsky remarked, "The only person who he really hates is himself." Thus, he is perhaps one of EastEnders' most intriguing characters to date.
Storylines
Arrival
Sean first appeared in Walford on 22 August, 2006. He began surveillance on the newly arrived Al whom he wanted revenge on for somehow causing him to lose his job in the armed forces. He broke into Al's flat, and later following him into the Queen Victoria pub where he saw his sister Stacey, who he had lost contact with since their father, Brian, died. Though he only visited Walford to avenge Al and only bumped into Stacey by chance, he decided to stay to look after her. After moving in with his sister, he immediately started to pursue Tanya Branning, eventually kissing her at a party and even taunting her husband Max Branning about it, to which Max didn't take kindly and tried to attack Sean with a broken beer glass, but was stopped quickly by the younger man's quick reflexes.
Ruby Allen
He quickly became bored with life in Walford and was about to leave, but decided to start a relationship with Ruby Allen after discovering her new found wealth following the imprisonment of her father, Johnny Allen. She found him a job at her Scarlet nightclub. However, the club manager and Johnny's right-hand man Jake Moon refused to trust Sean. When he and Ruby began dating, Jake was wary of Sean slacking off work, and walked in on Sean with the brewery agent, Karin Jones. Sean implied from his actions that he and Karin had just had sex. Jake and Sean continued to wind each other up, despite "making up" for Ruby. After Ruby revealed to Sean that Jake killed his brother Danny, Sean used this to attempt to drive Jake out of Walford, as it would have been easier to control Ruby without Jake around. Once Johnny had died, Sean stole Jane Collins' engagement ring and used it to propose to Ruby, but he later returned it and bought Ruby a new one. Sean slept with Preeti Choraria and broke into the house of Tanya Branning in an attempt to seduce her whilst Ruby was in Venice. Stacey knew that Sean was after her money and warned him to back off. She later told Ruby what he did but she forgave him. Ruby wanted to move to her Essex home with Sean, who agreed to this. Unfortunately she told his mother, Jean, that he was back. When Sean visited his mother, he was hostile to her, and told her that he left because of her. This led to an emotional breakdown for Sean. He returned home and was prepared to leave with Ruby, but instead threw Johnny's ashes at her, and told her he was sick of her whining and wanted nothing to do with her. Ruby left Walford in the back of a taxicab. Sean, Stacey and Bradley were forced to leave the house when Ruby put it up for sale. Along with Stacey he moved back in with Charlie. Sean continued to flirt with Tanya, grinning when he saw her in a skimpy Santa's outfit singing songs in The Queen Vic. Sean was angry when Charlie decided to invite Jean to a family dinner on Christmas Day. He consequently decided to leave for Egypt as a way to avoid spending Christmas with his mother. On the day he went, he tried to get a kiss from Tanya since they were standing under mistletoe, but failed to. Stacey found out that Sean had gone after he left a letter for her. After Sean returned from Spain he continued to wind Max up about Tanya. Sean later heard Max talking dirty to someone on the phone (Unaware it was actually his little sister Stacey) and accused Max of having an affair. Max denied it, but Sean didn't believe him. At Ian Beale's dinner party, Sean told Max that he was a liar and a cheat, and that he would be waiting for Tanya when she found out about his affair. At Peggy's 65th birthday party Stacey and Tanya had a row. Stacey threw a glass of champagne over Tanya and slapped her. Sean and Max broke the fight up and Tanya ran into the Queen Vic toilets with Sean following her. He told her that she was beautiful and he kissed her. She did not resist his advances at the start but then pulled away for the sake of her family. She told him that if he cared for her at all he should leave her alone and he stepped aside. Sean then left to go on holiday.
Carly Wicks
Sean started a brief relationship with Carly Wicks, stepsister of his then girlfriend Chelsea Fox. He dumped Chelsea in favour of Carly and began dating her for a while . However since Tanya's return, Sean resumed his pursuit of her.
Framed
Subsequently, Patrick Trueman was attacked by an unseen person whilst stacking shelves in his Minute-Mart store. Deano and Chelsea, as an act of revenge, lied to police detectives that Sean (who arrived on the scene not long after Patrick was taken to hospital) was Patrick's attacker. With Sean aware that the police were after him, he hid from them in various parts of the square where he believed they would not look. After confronting Gus and thinking he was going to phone the police on his mobile regarding him, Sean smashed the phone into a nearby brick wall. Gus then approached the officers on the scene informing them that he just seen Sean, and showed them the state of his mobile. Sean subsequently hid himself in the cellar of the Queen Victoria. The detectives entered the Vic looking for Sean, and felt confident that he was in the back of the building. Using radio communication and alongside uniformed police, they entered the cellar, only for Sean to escape quickly using his army skills, and attempt to run away quickly. However, the number of policemen chasing him was too high, and he was forced to the ground despite his attempts to physically fend them off, before being handcuffed with the locals watching, including his sister Stacey. Sean's solicitor was confident that the police would let Sean go and told Carly this after he had left Sean in the police station. Carly later discovered Sean's blood-stained shirt, a vital piece of evidence. Sean was then charged with the attempted murder of Patrick due to another witness coming forward. From prison, Sean orchestrated an attack on Deano by trading an MP3 player that Stacy got for him, for a mobile phone. On 30 August, Sean confessed to Carly that he was the reason that Deano had been beaten up. Carly was horrified with Sean and ended her relationship with him. She claimed that she would never see him again and hoped he'd rot in prison. She then left. On 31 August, it was revealed that Sean was not the person who had attacked Patrick. Carly was given Chelsea's bag, after she was mugged, which contained the CCTV tape. Kevin Wicks thought it was a film, and while Carly was out getting popcorn, he played it, and it turned out that Craig Dixon was the attacker. Sean was subsequently released, and Deano and Chelsea were arrested for attempting to pervert the course of justice. Since his release from custody, Sean got his revenge on Chelsea and Deano, by cutting Chelsea's hair while she was asleep, and teasing Deano about what it would be like for him in prison, as well as almost breaking his hand. But his revenge didn't stop there as he pushed Deano's head down a toilet. Sean stated that he wanted to walk Stacey down the aisle at her wedding, but she refused, saying that she wanted Charlie to do it. This upset Sean. However, Stacey later changed her mind, and asked Sean to walk down the aisle with her after all, since he was the closest person to her, as she had to a father. Sean was touched and he agreed. He appeared in court for Deano and Chelsea's court case, and enjoyed it when both of them were sentenced to 6 months in prison. Sean broke into the The Queen Vic one night after it closed and started vandalising it, However when the landlady Peggy Mitchell came down the stairs and saw him doing it, she wasn't surprised and asked him to even hit her. This indicated that the break in had been orchestrated by Peggy who had asked Sean to help her so that she could claim on the insurance to pay off her debts. He nearly kissed Tanya again after paying her another compliment by telling her she looked "beautiful" but she told him to get out since she was yet again tempted to kiss him. Sean was at a lunch at the Brannings house which included the family of both Stacey and Bradley. His mother Jean tried to kiss him hello but he leaned away from her and he even pull the seat away from her when she tried to sit down next to him.
Sean finds out
Shortly before the wedding of Stacey and Bradley, Sean overheard his sister talking with Max, and worked out that they had had an affair. On the morning of the wedding, Sean attacked Max and got him to confess to his adultery by threatening him with a broken bottle. He also punched Max in the stomach when Max kept telling lies. Sean wanted to stop the wedding whilst at the church, but had second thoughts when Stacey told him that he owed her kindness for caring for their mother, Jean and the wedding went ahead. Afterwards, at the reception in the Vic, Sean told Max that he would suffer if he ever touched his sister again. Sean told his mother to leave the next day and threw her out. However, when she was walking across the Square at night she was knocked down by some teenagers who were setting off fireworks. Sean saw this and chased after the teenagers, pinning one up against a parked car and threatening him. However, he let the teenager go when his mother shouted at him, since she seemed to be upset. Jean went home but had left some pills behind and Sean took them to her flat on Charlie's advice. She asked her son to stay for dinner and though he didn't want to, he agreed, but took two of her tranquilisers to make him sleep. When Jean discovered he had done this the next day they argued and as they were doing so, the police knocked at the door looking for Sean following a complaint made by the teenager he had threatened. Jean lied and claimed she didn't speak to Sean anymore and had no idea where he was. When the police had gone Jean asked her son what was troubling him but her constant questions made him angry and he left her flat, deciding to leave Walford altogether until Stacey returned from her honeymoon. He met Tanya in the street and begged her to come with him. She refused, and Sean left after facing Max and telling him that he could wait for when his and Stacey's affair would be out in the open. After some weeks away, Sean returned to Walford just before Christmas. Stacey tried to make the peace with him but Sean was hostile towards her saying that whilst Max had a beautiful wife and children, he had a psycho mother and a messed up little sister and nowhere to call home. Sean spent the night in the back of a car on the car lot run by Kevin Wicks. When Ronnie Mitchell was short of a barman at her club, she offered Sean a one night trial, and was so impressed with his work that she offered him a full time job. He also ended up spending the night with his ex-girlfriend Carly Wicks, which didn't please Pat.
Sean made peace with Stacey, telling her in the cafe that he was going to stay in Walford because he wanted to support her when things went wrong (as he knew they would when people discovered that Max had been cheating with her). The next day when Sean invited Stacey for a drink later that evening, she asked her brother if he would have Christmas lunch with her and their mother at the Branning's. Although Sean was reluctant at first, he later agreed, stating that things between him and Stacey were now okay.
New Home
Sean heard that Gus Smith was looking for a flatmate and he asked him about it. Gus told him he had someone lined up to look round the flat, but Sean took matters into his own hands and moved himself into Gus's flat when he changed the locks. When Gus came back from visiting his Aunt, he was shocked to find that Sean had moved into his flat uninvited and was left speechless when Sean gave him a week's rent in advance.
Revelation of Max and Stacey's affair
Sean spent Christmas Day at the Brannings' house, along with the rest of the Slater family. Following dinner they all sat down to watch the DVD of Stacey and Bradley's wedding. Max and Stacey had been caught kissing on tape and the guests watched in shock. Sean comforted Stacey when Bradley ran out. She begged Sean to talk to Tanya and to apologise for her. Sean comforted her as she was in hysterics. She began to kiss him but he pulled away claiming it was not what she wanted. He then told her he would take care of her. She told him he was patronising her and asked him to leave.
Sean and Tanya
On New Year's Eve, Sean witnessed Max and Tanya having an argument. He felt sorry for her and went to her house to comfort her, but she responded with anger. However, she quickly felt guilty and asked him to come over for New Year's Eve. On his way to Tanya's house, Sean ran into Carly, who asked if he was going out but he said no, which she took as a sign that they were over. Tanya and Sean were having dinner and flirting, and he said that she made him feel uneasy. She then went out for some wine and ran into Max at the pub. She said she was having dinner with a friend and left with a smug look on her face. When Tanya got back they started flirting again until Max arrived, banging on the door. Tanya told Sean not to open the door but he opened it anyway and Max came in and started an arguement with Sean so Tanya went to the club, but later went home where Max was still waiting. Sean later returned for a kiss at midnight but she told him the night was over and shut the door on him. Sean ran into Tanya the next day, and apologised for the bad New Year's they had. Later on, He went to visit Tanya in the salon and discovered the place had been broken into. He offered to clean it up for her, to which she accepted. Afterwards, Sean arrived at her house to return the keys and said that the place had been cleaned up. Tanya was surprised and happy at this calling him, her hero. She invited him in for a drink and he obliged. Sean and Tanya were talking on the couch and she was claiming she couldn't rely on anyone. Sean said she could rely on him. Tanya started to shout and ridicule herself, claiming she was fat and frumpy, Sean then tried to kiss her but she pulled away. She said that she just wanted someone to hold her and if he wanted to leave she would understand. Sean replied saying she was all he wanted and hugged her. The next morning, Tanya woke up to find Sean beside her in bed, holding Oscar. She thanked him for not pressuring her into anything as they did not sleep together. Tanya came down and tried to distract the girls so they wouldn't see Sean. He creeped into the kitchen but the back door was locked. When Abi came into the kitchen, Sean hid under the table. Later on, Sean and Tanya were talking at the kitchen table when Max walked in. He claimed Tanya was using Sean. When Max left, Sean asked if it was true. Tanya said that she was a little but not as much as she'd want to. The next day Sean and Tanya was kissing on her sofa, when she noticed his old scar on his torso from when he was shot by Al, she then started to ask him questions about his time in the Army, to which he said he liked it. She then asked him if he ever shot or killed anyone during his time in the Army, Sean revealed that he did shoot and kill someone.
