History

SPCE was founded in 1962 and inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. At the time, it was only the fourth Engineering Institute in the Bombay region after VJTI, UDCT and IIT Bombay. The college started with three disciplines of engineering - Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Electronics and Computer Engineering were started in 1995 and Information Technology (IT) in 1998. These three courses were privately funded by the college management whereas the Civil, Mechanical and Electrical courses are provided funds by the government. Mumbai University recognized the college as two separate institutions - SPCE (Aided) offering Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering courses and SPCE (Unaided) offering Electronics, Computer Science and IT engineering courses now known as Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT). The unaided section was formally separated from its parent college in 2005 and established as Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT). However, the day-to-day operations of the two institutions is often a joint effort as they share some common facilities. The students of the two colleges mingle freely in extracurricular activities. The college boasts of having the 2nd best campus-placement program amongst Engineering Institutions registered with the University of Mumbai.

Location

The college is located at Munshi Nagar, Andheri (West), Mumbai - 400058. The suburb of Andheri is well connected by the local train network and by road. As such, the college is a fifteen minutes walk away from Andheri railway station. It is also served by many BEST routes. The college shares the campus with Bhavan's College (offering courses in Arts, Science and Commerce), S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) and two elementary and high schools. The campus also has a tennis court, a sports field, a bank extension, a lake and a botanical garden. A few government undertakings have their facilities here.

Courses

The college offers full time courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. These are four year courses leading to a Bachelor of Engineering conferred by Mumbai University. It also offers part time graduate courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering. These part time courses are run after regular hours, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.. The timing enables working professionals to join these courses. Recently, the college has been granted permission to conduct PhD course in Civil engineering. → Departments

Extracurricular Activities

SPCE lays an emphasis on all-round development of an individual. There is as much activity outside the classroom as inside it.

Student Bodies

The Students' Council is the primary student representative body. It looks after the gymkhana and organizes and manages events like SPACE, Annual Day, Technobreak, BE Farewell, Freshies Welcome and so on. The general secretary and the cultural secretary are mainly responsible for the smooth conduct of these activities. They work under the guidance of the Vice President (who is a professor). The sports secretaries of the council also organize various sports events during the academic year. Each stream has its own student body -

  • Civil Engineering Association (CEA)
  • Mechanical Engineering Students Association (MESA)
  • Electronics Students Association (ESA)
  • Electrical Engineering Students Association (EESA)
  • Information Technology Students Association (ITSA)

The college also has a student chapter of the IEEE. The Marathi Wangmay Mandal is a group of Marathi literature and performing arts enthusiasts.

College Festivals

The Students' Council organizes five events.

  • Freshies Welcome - An event to "welcome" first year students to the college.

  • Technobreak - An intra-collegiate festival, essentially a full dress rehearsal for SPACE
  • SPACE - An inter-collegiate festival

Each student body organizes its own event.

  • Nirmiti - CEA
  • Torque - MESA
  • Spark - EESA

The IEEE chapter organizes Nirmaan, a tech fest. The Marathi Wangmay Mandal organizes Bhavspandan and Geetspandan, literature and performing arts events exclusively in Marathi language.

College Magazine

SPCE has its own annual college magazine named 'Disha'(direction). It is a microcosm of SPCE itself. It includes reports on the activities that have taken place in SPCE throughout the year, as well as articles and photographs which depict the activities and thoughts of different members of the SPCE community.
