History

Santa Cruz del Sur after the Hurricane of '32
Santa Cruz del Sur after the Hurricane of '32

The city have a special place in history due to sad story involving its total destruction by Sea penetration caused by a catastrophic huricane in November 1932.[4] In a few hours between dawn and midmorning this black day the city disappear under the sea, 3000+ of its inhabitants drowned or were crush by flying debris taken by wind of 200+ km/h. The story of why only few people survived and why the town was never evacuated is still somewhat unclear. The hurricane was supposed to take an easter route. When the notification of the danger for the town arrived it was already too late, part of it was already underwater, the train that should be used for evacuation never made in time despite the advise of old fisherman that could feel something wrong was brewing in the atmosphere. The testimonies of what happen are terribly described by the few survivors; not only winds and the rising level of the water were taking lives "we could hear people screaming in the next cabins until water suddenly drowned their voices", two huge waves "roaring like lions" draging logs, wood and all sort of floating debris took down what was left of the city and in its retrieval it drag bodies and still life people to the open sea.
