Santa Cruz is a census-designated place (CDP) in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 630 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Santa Cruz is located at 26°20′56″N, 98°46′4″W (26.348871, -98.767815)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 630 people, 158 households, and 148 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,547.7 people per square mile (593.3/km²). There were 179 housing units at an average density of 439.7/sq mi (168.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 80.63% White, 0.63% African American, 17.46% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 99.68% of the population. There were 158 households out of which 60.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 81.0% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 5.7% were non-families. 5.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.99 and the average family size was 4.13. In the CDP the population was spread out with 37.8% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 5.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 81.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.6 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $16,563, and the median income for a family was $22,581. Males had a median income of $11,771 versus $12,625 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $4,493. About 59.7% of families and 65.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 73.0% of those under age 18 and 56.3% of those age 65 or over.
