SRM University is a co-educational private university located in the state of Tamil Nadu,India. The university has two campuses in Tamil Nadu at Kattankulatur, Kancheepuram district and Ramapuram and one in Modinagar, near Delhi. Previously functioning under Anna University, as SRM Engineering College, the institute gained deemed status in 2003-04, and was renamed SRMIST(SRM Institute of Science and Technology) and then eventually called SRM University. The institution is ISO 9001:2000 certified.

History

The beginnings of the college can be traced back to 1969, when Valliammai Society started a primary school called Florence Nightingale School (now the SRM Nightingale School). Later in 1984, Valliammai Polytechnic was set up. It was only in 1985 that SRM Engineering College was established. The SRM Group has investments in SRM Hospital, Geetha Constructions, Royal Southern Hotels, SRM Printers, SRM Benefit Fund Ltd., SRM Systems and Software, SRM Easwari Travels and Tours India(P) Ltd., Blossom Infotech.

The Campus

Since the Institution is a private one, the campus is huge and the infrastructure is excellent and well maintained. The Indian Bank,The City Union Bank, The Royal Southern(a three-star hotel), and the Royal Inn Restaurant are located in the campus grounds. The various blocks within SRMIST include, the PG Block, the Hi-Tech Block, the Main Block, the Mechanical Block, the Mech PG Block, the Electrical Sciences Block, the Computer Science Block, the Biotech block,IT Park,an auditorium, a Library with an Internet Cafe as well. There are also about half a dozen hostels, some of which are the K.R.S Hostel, the UG Hostel, the PG Hostel, Meenakshi Women's Hostel, International Hostel.

Admissions

Admission to SRM Engineering college is based on an entrance examination SRMEEE(SRM Engineering Entrance Examination) which is conducted in centers all over India and Bhutan. Short-listed students will be called for counseling and admission procedures will be carried out.

Placement

Companies that visit the campus for recruitment include Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Xansa, HCL, Mahindra&Mahindra, Ford, Alstom, Siemens, Motorola, Mindtree, Samsung etc. Professor S.Ganapathy is the principal placement officer.

University Status

The university is approved by the University Grants Commission and is also accredited by the NAAC National Assessment and Accreditation Council.^[1]It has been given a grade of B+(overall score) by NAAC.

Controversies

In 2006, AICTE issued a notice that degrees awarded by deemed universities would not be recognized unless the courses were approved by the council. Following this, a legal battle ensued with the institution arguing that they had the approval of the University Grants Commission and that they did not come under the purview of AICTE. The issue led to demonstrations by students demanding to know the status and validity of their degrees. The demonstrations that were peaceful to begin with turned violent^[2]when the management allegedly mobilized henchmen to disperse the student gathering. The student and police clash at the institute led to property damage worth 13 crore rupees and injured the reporter and cameraman from NDTV who were covering the incident. As per court declaration, it is clearly stated that SRM need not get any approval from AICTE and can function directly under UGC, the apex body for education in india.
