SIMS.net is a schools information management system, formerly sold as SIMS and rebranded as part of a move to an ASP hosted delivery model in the early 2000s. SIMS was acquired by Capita education systems in 1994.[1] As SIMS, the software gained strong market presence in the UK, a position which it still holds. A 2005 survey for the Department for Education and Skills found that it was in use in 40% of surveyed primary schools,[2] and a report into capital modernisation in secondary schools indicates that it has around twice the market share of its nearest rival, Bromcom.[3] A report in The Guardian newspaper in 2005 states that SIMS.net is used in 70% of all UK schools,[4] and quotes standards agency BECTA as being particularly critical of Capita's costs and value for money.
