It was by far the largest sub-national entity in the world by area and 2nd in population then and ever, after Uttar Pradesh, India. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Sichuan, China became the 2nd most populous subnational entity until 1997 when it was divided up.

History

The RSFSR was established on November 7, 1917, and on July 10 1918 the 1918 Constitution was accepted. It became part of the Soviet Union in 1922, an act formalised by the 1924 Soviet Constitution. It was only internationally recognized by one state, the Irish Republic. In English, the term Bolshevist Russia is commonly used for the period 1917–1922. In Russian official documents of the time it was referred to as Russian Republic (Российская Республика, Rossiyskaya Respublika) and Soviet Republic (Советская Республика, Sovetskaya Respublika). The country was run by the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian SFSR, its most recent title. Its capital was Moscow, also the capital of the Soviet Union. Nikita Khrushchev transferred Crimea from the Russian SFSR to the Ukrainian SSR in 1955. It was only internationally recognized by one state, the Irish Republic.

Post-Soviet Russia

The RSFSR ceased to be a part of the Soviet Union on December 12 1991[specify], fourteen days before the Soviet Union ceased to exist. It was renamed the Russian Federation under the leadership of President Boris Yeltsin, in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) until 1993. RSFSR and later the Russian Federation have been widely accepted as the Soviet Union's successor state in diplomatic affairs and it has assumed the USSR's permanent membership and veto in the UN Security Council.
