Founded as a citizen based non-profit environment organization in 1986, the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature (RSPN) works on environment conservation and sustainable development throughout the country. RSPN’s missions is to inspire personal responsibility and actively involve the people of Bhutan in the conservation of the Kingdom's environment through education, applied research and information dissemination. RSPN programmes are based on its five year strategic plan and include species, ecosystem, and community based conservation programs outside of the protected areas system. Environment Education continues to be an important program involving students/ individuals in schools, institutions, and communities through out the country. Regular advocacy programs on emerging environmental problems are also carried out with the help of local volunteers and members. Efforts include waste cleanup and management campaigns, networking and collaboration with relevant national and international agencies. Institutional development and capacity building for research and increased public involvement in environmental programs are priorities of the organization for sustained conservation efforts.
