Rowan County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population was 22,094. Its county seat is Morehead6. The county was created in 1856 from adjacent counties originally part of Mason county, and named for John Rowan, who represented Kentucky in the U.S. House and Senate. With regard to the sale of alcohol, it is classified as a moist county—a county in which alcohol sales are prohibited (a dry county), but containing a "wet" city, in this case Morehead, where package alcohol sales are allowed.[1]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 286 square miles (741 km²), of which, 281 square miles (727 km²) of it is land and 5 square miles (14 km²) of it (1.90%) is water. Highest Point - "Limestone Knob" ~1409 ft.-AMSL

As of the census² of 2000, there were 22,094 people, 7,927 households, and 5,215 families residing in the county. The population density was 79 people per square mile (30/km²). There were 8,985 housing units at an average density of 32 per square mile (12/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.98% White, 1.56% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 7,927 households out of which 30.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.40% were married couples living together, 10.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.20% were non-families. 27.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.91. The age distribution was 20.30% under the age of 18, 23.50% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 20.00% from 45 to 64, and 10.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. Both the unusually large portion of the population in the 18-to-24 range and the relatively low median age are mainly because of the presence of Morehead State University. For every 100 females there were 94.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.10 males. The median income for a household in the county was $28,055, and the median income for a family was $34,338. Males had a median income of $26,777 versus $20,104 for females. The per capita income for the county was $13,888. About 15.90% of families and 21.30% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.80% of those under age 18 and 16.20% of those age 65 or over.
