About Zoro

According to Eichiro Oda, Zoro resembles a shark.[4] Oda uses the color green to represent Zoro, and he smells of steel.[5] Oda has also said that Zoro's favorite foods are white rice, sea monster meat, and "stuff that goes with ale" .[6] His family name, Roronoa, comes from the real-life French pirate François l'Ollonais[7]. Zoro is a skilled swordsman, able to use one, two and three swords in varying attack styles, although he is most proficient with his Santōryū (literally: three sword style), clutching his third sword in his mouth. Zoro is somehow able to speak with his sword held in his mouth; Eiichiro Oda has stated that it is his heart that allows him to do so.[8] Though not a samurai, he maintains his own code of honor. Zoro is an atheist[9], claiming the only being he's ever believed in is himself. Zoro spent his childhood training in a dojo in Shimoshiki village. The only member of the dojo he could not defeat was the sensei's daughter, Kuina. After losing two thousand times in battle against her, Zoro challenged Kuina to a match with real swords. He was defeated again, and became distraught. Kuina told him that she was the one who should be angry, because as a woman she would naturally become his inferior in time. Zoro angrily renounced her speech, telling her that if she claimed her female figure was responsible for his victory, he would be dishonored. He and Kuina then agreed that both of them would strive to become the world's greatest swordsman. The next day Kuina died falling down a set of stairs. Zoro asked his sensei for Kuina's sword, and upon receiving it, vowed to become a swordsman so great that his name would be heard even in Heaven. To accomplish this, he must defeat Dracule Mihawk, the man currently regarded as the world's greatest swordsman. Zoro confronted Mihawk once early in the series, but lost the battle and was left with the huge scar on the front of his torso. Eiichiro Oda stated that he originally created Zoro as a bodyguard of Buggy the Clown in earlier versions of the story.[10]

Powers and Abilities

Zoro has several sword techniques at his disposal, using one sword, two swords, or all three. He is also capable of fighting effectively with no swords(as shown when disarmed or otherwise prohibited from using his katana).[11] Zoro also has the ability to cut through solid steel[12], or materials as hard as steel, which he learned when fighting Das Bones(Baroque Works Mr. 1) in Arabasta.

Other Techniques

Zoro's physical strength is enough to lift a building[13], and he has fought before wielding a sword while Usopp was attached to his hand. He is also capable of using the 'Asura' technique[14], which gives the impression of Zoro wielding nine swords simultaneously.
