Veronica "Ronnie" Mitchell is a fictional character in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders. She is played by Samantha Janus.[1] Ronnie and her sister Roxy (played by Rita Simons) made their first on-screen appearances on 24 July 2007.[2] Ronnie is in her thirties and single,[3] and the elder of the two sisters.[1] Her personality is described by Janus as "the more sensible and clever of the two, but she has a caustic tongue. She won't trust anyone enough to let them get close to her... they are very, very loyal. She would kill for her sister."[1] She has also been described as the ice, as opposed to Roxy's fire,[1] and as having a dark side to her personality.[4] Both sisters have been described as glamorous, and have been compared to the Kray twins, Ronnie and Reggie. Janus has noted that it is no coincidence that the sisters are named Ronnie and Roxy. She also describes the sisters as "co-dependent and dysfunctional", as well as "chilling, dark and absolutely in touch with what the other is doing".[5]

Arrival

Ronnie arrived in Walford with her sister Roxy on 24 July 2007 for their cousin Phil's wedding to Stella Crawford, and the sisters decided to move permanently to Walford from Ibiza where they ran a bar together.[6] Since arriving, Ronnie became involved in a feud between the Mitchells and Ian Beale. On 16 October 2007 Ronnie revealed that she wanted to buy the night club Scarlet previously owned by Ruby Allen. At the end of October and the beginning of November 2007, Ronnie became intrigued by newcomer Jack Branning (played by Scott Maslen, Samantha Janus' real life friend[7] and godfather of one of her children). However, Ronnie didn't let it show that she was interested in him, which made Jack (who had already figured this out) all the more determined to crack her icy exterior and get her to admit her interest in him. He challenged her to a poker game, in which she hoped to win enough money to pay off Peggy Mitchell's debts, and Ronnie went on to win it by figuring out early on that Jack was cheating. This not only won Peggy the money she desperately needed, but also deepened the mutual interest between Jack and Ronnie. Shortly after, Ronnie realised she needed more money to buy the nightclub so Roxy said that she would help her sister out financially by selling the engagement ring bought for her by her ex-fiancé Damian. Roxy sold the engagement ring for £5,000, and then bought a brand new car and a Boxer puppy called Albert, giving Ronnie just £500 as her share of the club, which Ronnie told her worked out at only 5 percent. Ronnie found out that another buyer had put in a higher offer on the club than she could afford to pay, unaware that the buyer was Jack. She then went to the club and lamented on her bad luck, not noticing when Jack stepped into the club behind her. Confronting him over why he had any interest in buying the club, Jack suggested to her that she became an equal partner in the ownership. Ronnie refused until Jack said that he was returning to Manchester and nobody would need to know that he actually owned the club, which would give back Ronnie and Roxy their dream of having the club as their own. Ronnie then accepted Jack's offer, and later she told a delighted Roxy and Peggy that she had become the new owner of the club, avoiding telling them that Jack owned it in partnership with her. Jack then left Walford for Manchester.

R & R

On the opening night of the club, now named R&R, Ronnie was surprised when she walked into the office and found Jack sitting at her desk, having returned unannounced to Albert Square. Jack then proceeded to observe opening night, and concluded that the night had been a success, before telling Ronnie that he had returned to Walford permanently, contrary to what she had previously believed. He also informed Ronnie that her apparent disinterest in him wasn't fooling anyone, least of all Jack, leaving Ronnie fuming. Ronnie and Jack then clashed over the new opening time of R&R, which Jack changed from 10 p.m. to 7 p.m., the same time that the Mitchells' family pub, The Queen Victoria, normally opened for business.

Truth Revealed

During a meeting between Roxy, Peggy, Phil and Ronnie, Jack walked in and informed the rest of the Mitchells that he co-owned the club with Ronnie. Roxy and Peggy looked shocked and disappointed, while Phil glared at Jack, as earlier he had been introduced to Jack and instantly saw him as an untrustworthy person. Jack left the Mitchells to sort out their own problems. Phil realised that something was wrong, as Ronnie and Roxy had enough money from the sale of their club in Ibiza to be able to buy the club, and Peggy was forced to tell him that the money had been spent on clearing her debts. Phil and Peggy then went back to the pub to discuss the relevation of her now-cleared debts, while Ronnie and Roxy remained at the club.

Ronnie's Dark Secrets

While an argument was going on between Ronnie and Roxy about the club, Roxy revealed some of Ronnie's secrets. As Ronnie immediately went cold as soon as Roxy mentioned how Ronnie had scarred her chin with a piece of glass when they were children. Ronnie was about to leave to carry on running the club, when Roxy mentioned how Ronnie had lost something very close to her. Immediately, Ronnie's icy demeanour broke and she furiously grabbed Roxy and threw her against a wall and then down face first onto a desk, banging her head against it telling her never to speak of that incident again. Roxy then left the office, and on the way out of the club and onto the streets, she burst into tears. Ronnie returned to the pub and poured herself a drink, before pouring one for Roxy too. At about 3.15 a.m., Roxy returned and Ronnie offered her the drink to make up for the events of earlier that night. Roxy declined to do so, telling Ronnie that she was now looking out entirely for herself, and would not be relying on Ronnie in the future.Ronnie secret past wil get revealed in 2008

Fallout with Roxy

With the two sisters hardly looking at or speaking to each other over the next couple of days, Phil decided to take matters into his own hands and resolve their differences, supported in this decision by Peggy, who was concerned about Ronnie and Roxy. Phil offered to pay Jack the same amount of money that he had paid for the club, so that it would belong entirely to the Mitchells, and threw Jack's offer to be friends back in his face, telling him that he didn't like him because he had interfered with Phil's family. Ronnie had also decided to move out of the Vic and find a place of her own, so that she could get her head together and decide what to do next, and Roxy wasn't very pleased despite their falling out before. Jack said he would think about the offer, but having spoken to Ronnie later on, he returned the cheque to Phil at the Vic, declining to accept the offer. When Phil's back was turned as he served a customer, Jack sneaked upstairs and spoke to Roxy, urging her to make up with her sister to end the hostility between them and get them focused on running the club again. Roxy acted on his words and made up with Ronnie back at the club, accepting the drink that Ronnie had offered her at the Vic. Ronnie then decided to move back into the Vic, although the feud between Jack and Phil was far from over, with the two of them staring at each other from across the Square.

Jack Branning

After discovering that Jack intended to help Phil find his daughter Louise, Ronnie told Jack that she was really proud of what he was doing for her cousin and kissed him under the mistletoe at the Queen Vic on Christmas Day 2007. It was clear that both were smitten with each other, and Jack began to think that he was in with a chance. However, Ronnie icily began playing hard to get and when Jack coaxed her into helping him out at their club R&R due to a private party that was taking place there on Boxing Day, she stormed out when she realised that he'd set up a romantic meal for them in the club and that there was no private party. On 28 December he tried to make it up to her by offering to take her out that night, but Ronnie told him she had a date. When he tried to outdo her date by booking an expensive restaurant for the pair of them, he was left embarassed when he realised that her date was her 11-year-old cousin Ben Mitchell, whom she was taking to the pantomime. However, despite the fact that nothing has yet happened between them, they are both interested in each other and it is only a matter of time before a romance begins to blossom... ronnie and jack kissed in the club office
