Established in 1909, the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science ("McCormick" or "Tech") is one of six undergraduate schools at Northwestern University. 162 faculty members teach an undergraduate class of 1,398 students and a graduate class of 1,121 students. The median SAT score for students is 1430 out of 1600. Most engineering classes are held in the Technological Institute, which, like the school itself, students often refer to as "Tech." In October 2005, a new state-of-the-art facility named the Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center opened, giving students opportunities for learning about design and teamwork. McCormick is home to 8 departments of engineering:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Chemical and Biological Engineering
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
  • Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics
  • Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

The school of engineering is highly esteemed in various departments. Three undergraduate and four graduate programs are ranked in top 10 in U.S. News & World Report. It is named after Chicago media mogul Robert R. McCormick.
