IMDb profile

Requiem (2006) is a German language film by Hans-Christian Schmid starring Sandra Hüller. The film has been promoted as a more truthful depiction of the real-life events of the exorcism of Anneliese Michel (September 21 1952July 1 1976), a German woman who was believed to have been possessed by six or more demons. These events also served as the basis of Scott Derrickson's 2005 movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Actress Sandra Hüller received a Silver Bear award in 2006 in Berlin for Best Actress, for her portrait of Anneliese Michel in Requiem. The film steers clear of special effects or dramatic music and instead presents documentary style filmmaking, which focuses on Michaela’s struggle to lead a normal life, trapped in a limbo which could either represent demonic possession or mental illness, yet seemingly opts to focus on the latter. In that regard, the film is more a respectfully crafted inspirational story rather than an attempt to cash in on the well documented case.
