Rebecca
Music Sylvester Levay
Lyrics Michael Kunze
Based upon Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Productions 2006 Vienna, Austria

Rebecca is a German-language musical based on the novel Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, written by Michael Kunze (lyrics) and Sylvester Levay (music), the authors of Elisabeth, Mozart! and Marie Antoinette. It premiered on September 28, 2006 at the Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria. The plot, which adheres closely to the original novel, revolves around Maxim DeWinter, his new wife, and Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper of DeWinter's Cornish estate Manderley, who resents the young woman's intrusion into the world she shared with the first Mrs. DeWinter, the glamorous and mysterious Rebecca, who perished in a drowning accident. Like their previous work together this musical is firmly in the house style of United Stages of Vienna. The music ranges from close choral scoring with a rising rhythm section from the pit to power ballads that would not seem out of place in 1980s Lloyd Webber score. The big achievement of Kunze and Levay in both Elisabeth and now Rebecca is the way in which the duo have created a unique following in the german speaking world for new musical theatre that is at turns entertaining and also has a high level of theatricality in the book. Time will tell if Rebecca is the breakthrough score that will make up for the miserable failure of Dance of The Vampires on Broadway (a score by Jim Steinman and lyrics and book by Michael Kunze). Rebecca was first planned to premiere in London, but then it was decided to premiere in Vienna istead. Rebecca will soon be performed in Helsinki and Oslo. The Japanese TOHO production of Rebecca opens in April 2008.
