Rachel Moore, known as Ran Mōri (毛利 蘭 Mōri Ran?) in the original Japanese anime and manga, is the 2nd main character of the anime and manga Case Closed, known in Japan as Detective Conan (名探偵コナン Meitantei Konan).

Character Information

Rachel is a childhood friend and the main romantic interest of Jimmy Kudo[1] (Shin'ichi Kudo) and the daughter of private detective Richard Moore (Kogoro Mori) and Eva Kadan (Eri Kisaki), a lawyer. Her parents separated when she was six[2], and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together. Rachel is the captain of the karate team of Teitan High School[3] (Titan High School in the English anime) and therefore is very powerful as demonstrated when she wins her Regional Championship[4]. Besides that, she is also very talented and very lucky in gambling. She is so lucky that she amazingly wins in all of the gambling games she ever played. After Jimmy disappears, a boy named Conan Edogawa comes to stay with Rachel, acting as her surrogate little brother[5]. Little does Rachel know that "Conan" is actually Jimmy shrunken down to size. Shortly after meeting him, she reveals her true feelings about Jimmy to him[6].

In time Rachel suspects that he is actually Jimmy, but Jimmy always manages to "prove" to her otherwise. This happens many times, and in one she was actually so sure until Jimmy (temporarily restored to his true age) appears at the same time as Conan (actually Ai Haibara). Every time Rachel learns that Conan is Jimmy, she tries to make him confess the truth. She also fantasises that Jimmy is with a brown/blond-haired woman (one of them had happened without her knowing, which was Episode 129 of the series) all the time. Her greatest personality trait is that she genuinely cares for those she loves and somehow finds the strength to hold onto hope that they will be reunited. She constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again - though with little success, thanks to mutual stubbornness - and nourishes the desire to see Jimmy again, despite the emotional hardship the waiting gives to her.

Trivia

  • Rachel's birthday is on October 1, in accordance of the live action drama.
  • Rachel's Japanese name comes from Edogawa Ranpo and Maurice Leblanc.
