Quinton Fortune (born May 21, 1977 in Cape Town) is a South African footballer who plays for the South African club Western Province United,[1] which he helped set up, in 1998 as 'FC Fortune'.
Club career
Fortune left South Africa at the age of 14 and moved to England where he played for the Tottenham Hotspur junior team, but never made a senior appearance for the club. After having trouble obtaining a work permit, Fortune moved to Spain, where he played for Atlético Madrid. Manchester United purchased him from Atlético Madrid on 1 August 1999. He made his first appearance for the club on 30 August 1999, against Newcastle United. Fortune was initially brought to United as cover for Ryan Giggs, and was thought of primarily as an attacking left-sided midfielder. Fortune, however, proved himself a capable and dedicated performer in a number of positions. It was Fortune's strength as a defender, rather than his qualities as an attacker, that Sir Alex Ferguson depended most on, and Fortune was often deployed as an uncompromising central midfielder or a solid, no-nonsense left-back. Fortune picked up an FA Premier League winners medal in 2002-03, despite being one appearance short of the required ten. Fortune was released by Manchester United in 2006. He was offered a contract by Celtic F.C. but rejected it on the grounds that the length of the contract was too short. He was also linked with Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers. Bolton took him on trial in the summer of 2006 and were very keen on signing him after he impressed at their summer training camp in Switzerland. On 26 July 2006 he signed a one-year deal with Bolton. After six league appearances in 2006-07, he was released by Bolton along with 3 other players, in May 2007. Fortune also plays for South Africa, and played in the 1998 and the 2002 World Cups. In December 2007, Fortune trained with Sunderland AFC with a view to a permanent move, joining his ex Man Utd team mate Roy Keane.[2]
