Quincy is a city in Gadsden County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,982 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 6,975 [1]. It is the county seat of Gadsden CountyGR6.

Geography

Quincy is located at 30°35′7″N, 84°35′5″W (30.585281, -84.584702)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.8 km² (7.6 mi²). 19.7 km² (7.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.13% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 6,982 people, 2,657 households, and 1,830 families residing in the city. The population density was 353.8/km² (916.4/mi²). There were 2,917 housing units at an average density of 147.8/km² (382.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 31.55% White, 64.15% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 3.22% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.89% of the population. There were 2,657 households out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.2% were married couples living together, 28.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% were non-families. 27.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17. In the city the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 80.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 72.1 males. The median income for a household in the city was $29,393, and the median income for a family was $31,890. Males had a median income of $27,871 versus $22,025 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,133. About 16.8% of families and 19.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.0% of those under age 18 and 23.1% of those age 65 or over. The Quincy Municipal Airport (identifier 2J9) has a single 3,000 foot long, 75 foot wide, paved, lighted runway (runway 32-14), lighted windsock and a rotating beacon. There are no paved taxiways. It has an occasionally manned FBO selling 100LL avgas. It is an approved drop zone with an active skydiving operation and occasional glider and ultralight aircraft activity. There is a VOR approach off of the Seminole VOR near Tallahassee and a GPS approach. The airport is now an independently chartered entity which is run by the Quincy-Gadsden Airport Authority. The authority has 5 non-paid members, two appointed by the city, 2 by the county and 1 by both.
