Geography
Princeton is located at (35.465236, -78.160414)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,066 people, 471 households, and 310 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,558.9 people per square mile (605.3/km²). There were 525 housing units at an average density of 767.7/sq mi (298.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 69.42% White, 29.55% African American, 0.75% from other races, and 0.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.94% of the population. There were 471 households out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% were married couples living together, 17.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.80. In the town the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.1 males. The median income for a household in the town was $24,706, and the median income for a family was $31,705. Males had a median income of $26,726 versus $20,690 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,389. About 17.8% of families and 23.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 34.2% of those under age 18 and 29.9% of those age 65 or over.
Princeton School
Princeton School is a Kindergarten through 12th grade school sharing the same campus (though in separate buildings). The high school athletics department is a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) and member of the Carolina Conference in the 1A (smallest) division. The baseball team is a perennial contender in the state playoffs having won the 1A State Championship in 1992, 1994, and 2007, and also finishing second in 1993 and 2004. Many athletes from Princeton High School have moved on to college and professional sports, most notabley Rodney Ormond (Pitcher for NC State University, Baltimore Orioles and Toronto BlueJays farm systems) Justin Willoughby (Pitcher in Atlanta Braves farm system) Scott Musgrave (Pitcher and Outfielder for Appalachian State University and Boston Red Sox farm system).
