HMP Peterborough opened in Spring 2005. It is a Category B prison and the first purpose-built prison to house both men and women, accommodating 480 men and 360 women, with a dozen of the latter places set aside for a maternity care unit. The prison's main use is for remand prisoners and those awaiting transfer to other prisons. Peterborough is run by United Kingdom Detention Services (UKDS). Operational Capacity is 840 as of 31 January 2006.
