Owl Magazine is a popular Canadian children's magazine founded in 1976. Aimed at those between the ages of 9 and 13, it is published ten times per year, including (since 2001) a summer issue in a smaller 'digest' format. Although it continues to present itself as 'The Discovery Magazine for Kids', in recent years, like Chickadee (the older of its two spinoff magazines for younger children), the magazine now features a large variety of topics. Inside the magazine is "What Hot's and Not's", occasionally having a DIY, the Sidesteppers comic, the popular Alex and Charlie comic and more. Originally, the Max Finder comic was in the magazine every month, but is now replaced by the Sidesteppers comic. There is also a section called Talk About It where readers send in questions that they want fellow readers to give advice on. Memorable past aspects of the magazine have included 'Dr. Zed' (written by the late Canadian scientist Gordon Penrose) and comic strip 'The Mighty Mites'. Related publications from OWL have included books and videos, produced by former owner OWL Communications. In 1997, OWL (as well as Chickadee and Chirp) was purchased by Bayard Press, which also publishes a number of Canadian French-language children's magazines.
