The Order of the Phoenix is a fictional organisation in the Harry Potter series of books written by J. K. Rowling. Founded by Albus Dumbledore to fight Lord Voldemort and his followers, the Death Eaters, the Order lends its name to the fifth Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Contents

Background

The Order was constituted sometime during Voldemort's first attempt to take power; it was disbanded after Voldemort's unsuccessful attempt to murder Harry Potter, as Voldemort was diminished from that attack. Original leader Albus Dumbledore, in ‘‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’’, called for its reconstitution due to Voldemort's reappearance. Many of the original members returned, with new ones replacing those who died in the service of the original Order. The Order established their headquarters at Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, London, Sirius Black's family home, during the interval between the fourth and fifth entries in the series. Dumbledore was the Secret-Keeper for the Order, meaning that Dumbledore could only reveal the Order’s headquarters at Grimmauld Place to others. Dumbledore's death at the hands of Severus Snape in book six made the location vulnerable and it was abandoned in favour of The Burrow.[HP7]

Role in the Books

From the end of Goblet of Fire on, the current incarnation of the Order led the fight against Voldemort, as the Ministry of Magic first refused to accept his return, and thereafter was unable to contain him. The Order participated in a battle at the Department of Mysteries near the end of Order of the Phoenix and Order members patrolled Hogwarts on the night of the Death Eaters' second attack and Dumbledore's death in Half-Blood Prince. In the series finale, attention turned to escorting the Death Eaters' main target, series protagonist Harry, from the Dursley's home to The Burrow and fighting the Death Eaters at Hogwarts. As the order was created primarily to combat Voldemort and his Death Eaters, it is unknown if the Order stayed together after Voldemort's death, or whether it disbanded much like the original group did.

Relations with the Ministry

Although Dumbledore and the original members of the Order had expected the return of Lord Voldemort, members of the Ministry of Magic - most notably the Minister for Magic himself, Cornelius Fudge - were not convinced. Fudge believed that Dumbledore was spreading rumours in an attempt to undermine his authority, due to Dumbledore's general popularity and critique of Fudge's mishandling of certain situations in the first four books of the series. Dumbledore, however, was vindicated when Lord Voldemort was finally seen in the Ministry headquarters itself. Fudge was replaced as Minister for Magic by Rufus Scrimgeour, former head of the Auror Department, three days before the beginning of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Members of the Order

Original

The following were members of the Order of the Phoenix during Lord Voldemort's initial rise to power and several years prior to the main events of the Harry Potter series. Many of these characters later served as members of the revived Order.

Name Accomplishments and Operations
Sirius Black Escaped from Azkaban and went on to serve in the revived Order. Helped defeat two Death Eaters in battle. Killed by Bellatrix Lestrange in the Battle at the Department of Mysteries.
Edgar Bones Killed, with his wife and children, by a Death Eater during the first Wizarding War. Edgar Bones was the brother of Amelia Bones. His niece, Susan Bones, is a Hufflepuff girl in Harry Potter's year.
Caradoc Dearborn Went missing during the First Wizarding War, presumably murdered by Death Eaters.
Dedalus Diggle Meets Harry Potter several times before it is revealed that he is member of the Order of the Phoenix. Diggle was part of the Advance Guard who helped Harry escape from the Dursleys' house in the fifth book. In the final instalment, he helped get the Dursleys into a protected area. The Death Eaters destroyed his house.
Elphias Doge Dumbledore's schoolmate. He writes an obituary of Dumbledore for The Daily Prophet and openly continued to defend Dumbledore, against doubting individuals such as Ron's aunt Muriel.
Aberforth Dumbledore Bartender at The Hog's Head in Hogsmeade village and younger brother of Albus Dumbledore. Assisted Harry in avoiding Death Eaters and entering Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows. He also helped defend the school during the Battle of Hogwarts, defeating Augustus Rookwood. Served in the revived Order.
Albus Dumbledore Founder of the original Order and frequently described as the greatest wizard of all time. Killed by Severus Snape on top of the Astronomy Tower in what was later revealed as a planned event. Defeated dark wizard Grindelwald. Gay.
Benjy Fenwick Blasted to pieces by Death Eaters. Only "bits of him" were recovered.
Arabella Figg Elderly woman, a Squib, who was enlisted by Dumbledore to watch over Harry during his entire childhood from her home in his neighbourhood. She later told Harry that she regretted being mean to him when he visited her, but that she had to keep the Dursleys from suspecting anything. Served in the revived Order.
Rubeus Hagrid Care of Magical Creatures Teacher at Hogwarts, as well as Keeper of Keys and Grounds and Gamekeeper. Served in the revived Order. During the escape from the Dursleys, the real Harry and Hagrid were both nearly killed in the crash of the flying motorcycle. Near the end of the Deathly Hallows, Lord Voldemort ordered Hagrid to carry Harry's body to show the Hogwarts Defenders. Although Hagrid did not know it at the time, Harry was only playing dead. Threw Walden Macnair into a wall.
Frank and Alice Longbottom Tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange after Voldemort was defeated. Their only son, Neville, is a Gryffindor in Harry's year, and a close friend.
Remus Lupin Incorrectly suspected of being a traitor to the first order. Also served in the revived Order as an integral part of the Advance Guard sent to safeguard Harry Potter, as he was someone whom Harry would recognize and instantly trust. Also went underground to infiltrate werewolves possibly serving Lord Voldemort. Killed by Antonin Dolohov in the Battle of Hogwarts.[1]
Minerva McGonagall Deputy Headmistress, Transfiguration professor, and head of Gryffindor House at Hogwarts. Also served in the revived Order. Extremely supportive of Dumbledore and his ideals. Helped defend the castle during the Second Battle of Hogwarts, and near the end of the battle fought Voldemort himself.
Marlene McKinnon Killed by Death Eaters (among them Travers, according to Igor Karkaroff) together with her whole family.
Dorcas Meadowes The only known member of the Order apart from James and Lily Potter who was personally killed by Lord Voldemort during the first Wizard War.
Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody Also served in the revived Order. Killed by Lord Voldemort as he was accompanying a fake Harry Potter to a safehouse.
Peter Pettigrew Defected to the Death Eaters and betrayed James and Lily Potter to their deaths. Killed by his own magical hand, made by Voldemort, for showing mercy to Ron and Harry.
Sturgis Podmore He was at the Ministry of Magic guarding the Prophecy until he was arrested by a Ministry of Magic security guard for trying to break into the Department of Mysteries, and was sentenced to Azkaban for six months. Harry, Ron and Hermione speculate that Lucius Malfoy had placed him under the Imperius Curse.
James and Lily Potter Killed by Voldemort, who was seeking to kill their son Harry.
Fabian & Gideon Prewett Molly Weasley's brothers, killed during the First War. It took five Death Eaters (including Antonin Dolohov) to kill the two of them. Molly gave Harry Fabian's watch as his seventeenth birthday gift.
Severus Snape Went on to serve in the revived Order. Killed in the Battle of Hogwarts by Nagini, since Voldemort thought Snape was the rightful owner of the Elder Wand.[2]
Emmeline Vance Part of the advance guard that helps Harry in his escape from the Dursleys in the fifth book. Death Eaters kill her in the summer of 1996 on information Snape claims to have given, as described in The Half-Blood Prince. However, as Snape was revealed to have been working on Dumbledore's side all along in Deathly Hallows, it raises doubts as to whether he really did provide information that could have been used to kill her.

Members of the Reconstituted Order

These characters joined the Order when Dumbledore revived it between books four and five of the Harry Potter series.

Name Accomplishments and Operations
Mundungus Fletcher Thief and con man who Dumbledore once helped "out of a tight spot" and in return kept Dumbledore apprised of things he would hear from the lower walks and criminal element in the Wizarding World. After Sirius died, he stole most of the valuables from Number 12 Grimmauld Place - including what was revealed to be the Slytherin locket Horcrux - and sold them, though he gave the locket to Dolores Umbridge in exchange for her not placing him under arrest. He was a reluctant part of the group sent to retrieve Harry in Deathly Hallows and panicked when Voldemort came towards him, disapparating to an unknown location and leaving Alastor Moody to be killed by Lord Voldemort.
Hestia Jones Part of the advance guard that helps Harry in his escape from the Dursleys in the fifth book. She then escorts the Dursleys into hiding at the beginning of the final book, along with Dedalus Diggle. Hestia is surprised to know that the Dursleys are unaware of Harry's importance in the anti-Voldemort movement, and later confronts them for the treatment they give to the boy.
Kingsley Shacklebolt An Auror, member of The Advance Guard, secretary/bodyguard for the Muggle Prime Minister, and part of the group that battled the Death Eaters in the Ministry at the end of Order of the Phoenix. Helped organize the Order members and students and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, near the end of the battle fighting Voldemort himself. After Voldemort's death, he became acting Minister of Magic. It was also stated that Shacklebolt was the only wizard the Dursleys ever trusted.
Nymphadora Tonks Was a member of the Advance Guard, and a part of the group that battled the Death Eaters in the Ministry at the end of book five. Later fought Death Eaters during the first attack on Hogwarts. Helped move Harry from the Dursleys' in book seven. Finally killed during the Battle of Hogwarts by Bellatrix Lestrange.
Arthur Weasley Father of the Weasley family, bit by Nagini while guarding the door to the Department of Mysteries in Order of the Phoenix. Assisted the Order by helping contact people who would believe Dumbledore and Harry's story in Order of the Phoenix. Fought against Pius Thicknesse, alongside his third son, Percy Weasley, in the Second Battle of Hogwarts.
Molly Weasley Helped guard the Department of Mysteries in Order of the Phoenix; allowed the Order to use her house as headquarters in Deathly Hallows, and killed Bellatrix Lestrange in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Bill Weasley Charm-breaker for Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Attacked and scarred by Fenrir Greyback during first Battle of Hogwarts. First son of Arthur and Molly, and brother to Percy, Charlie, Fred, George, Ron and Ginny. He married Fleur Delacour and was a go-between for the Order and the Goblin community. Fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Charlie Weasley Assigned to recruit foreign Order Members during the summer of 1996. Also fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Fleur Delacour Helped take Harry from the Dursleys' to The Burrow in Deathly Hallows, and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Fred Weasley Killed during the Battle of Hogwarts. Twin of George Weasley, famous prankster, and radio contributor on "Potterwatch" under the false name Rapier.
George Weasley Helped move Harry from the Dursleys' to The Burrow in Deathly Hallows. Was wounded by Severus Snape while on a broomstick. His ear was severed. Fought in the Battle of Hogwarts and defeated Yaxley alongside with Lee Jordan.

Assistants and Allies

These characters helped the Order but were not official members, often due to either being underage, in school or given other responsibilities.

Name How They Helped
Harry Potter Protagonist of series. Leader of the Dumbledore's Army. Showed marked interest in joining the Order. As an underage student, he participated in several of the Order's confrontations with the Death Eaters: the Battle at the Department of Mysteries, the fight against Death Eaters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and the escape from the Dursley home. Dumbledore had left him a mission to destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes, which he successfully completed with the help of Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom, Severus Snape, and Dumbledore himself. He also fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, facing and playing a major role in Voldemort's demise.
Hermione Granger Co-founded the Dumbledore's Army. She took part in several of the Order's confrontations with the Death Eaters: the Battle at the Department of Mysteries, and Harry's escape from the Dursley's home. In the Battle of Hogwarts, she helped protect Lavender Brown from Fenrir Greyback, destroyed the Hufflepuff Cup Horcrux, and fought against Bellatrix Lestrange with Luna Lovegood and Ginny Weasley.
Ron Weasley Member of the DA. He was part of the group that aided the Order during the Battle at the Department of Mysteries, the fight against Death Eaters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry's escape from the Dursley's home. Saved Harry's life and retreived Gryffindor's Sword, and destroyed the Slytherin Locket Horcrux with it. In the Battle of Hogwarts he teamed up with Neville Longbottom to defeat the werewolf Fenrir Greyback.
Neville Longbottom Member of the DA. Took part in the Battle at the Department of Mysteries and the fight against Death Eaters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Reactivated Dumbledore's Army in book seven. During the Battle of Hogwarts, he killed Voldemort's snake Nagini (which was the final Horcrux) and joined forces with Ron Weasley to defeat Fenrir Greyback.
Ginny Weasley Member of the DA. Underage throughout the series, she nonetheless aided the Order several times, fighting in the Battle at the Department of Mysteries and the fight against Death Eaters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. During the latter battle, she first fights alongside Nymphadora Tonks, and then later, in the Battle of Hogwarts, joins Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood in battling Bellatrix Lestrange.
Luna Lovegood Member of the DA. Luna took part in the Battle at the Department of Mysteries, and then aided Harry in discovering the appearance of the Lost Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw, which Voldemort had made into one of his Horcruxes. In the Battle of Hogwarts, she, Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley battled Bellatrix Lestrange.
Filius Flitwick Assisted in fortifying the castle from Death Eaters as well as defeating Antonin Dolohov.
Pomona Sprout Assisted in fortifying the castle from Death Eaters.
Horace Slughorn Led reinforcements to aid the defenders of Hogwarts. Duelled Voldemort himself alongside McGonagall and Kingsley.
Olympe Maxime Accompanied Hagrid on his journey to the giants.
Lee Jordan Member of the DA. Hosted Radio Show "Potterwatch", about Harry Potter telling the real news that Voldemort did not want people to know. Alongside George Weasley, Lee defeated the Death Eater Yaxley.
Percy Weasley Originally sided with the Ministry, saying that Voldemort had not returned. He eventually realized his mistake and assisted in the Battle of Hogwarts, covering his brother Fred's body from further damage after Fred was killed in battle, and later fought Pius Thicknesse alongside his father Arthur Weasley.
Andromeda Tonks Provided one of the safe houses for the Order members to go to when Harry was removed from Privet Drive by helping the Order hide Harry Potter from the Death Eaters. Later tortured for Harry's whereabouts.
Ted Tonks Provided one of the safe houses for the Order members to go to when Harry was removed from Privet Drive by helping the Order hide Harry Potter from the Death Eaters. Later murdered by Snatchers, while being on the run from the Ministry because he was a Muggle-born.
Auntie Muriel Provided one of the safe houses for the Order members to go to when Harry was removed from Privet Drive. Allowed the Weasleys to hide in her house while being targeted during Voldemort's regime.

Notable Order members

This is a list of notable members of the Order of the Phoenix. Albus Dumbledore, Sirius Black, Rubeus Hagrid, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, and James and Lily Potter have their own pages. Most of the members of the Weasley family are part of the Order, as well as some teachers from the Hogwarts staff.

Aberforth Dumbledore

Harry Potter character
Aberforth Dumbledore

Aberforth Dumbledore, portrayed by Jim McManus
in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Parentage Half-blood
Actor Jim McManus[3]
First appearance Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Aberforth Dumbledore (c.1884?) is Albus Dumbledore's brother. He was the younger of them by some three years, and the lesser skilled of the two; Albus even notes that he is uncertain if Aberforth can read. As such, he was usually left in the background while his brother basked in glory. He became the caretaker of his younger sister Ariana, but got into an argument with his brother and his brother's friend, Gellert Grindelwald, which resulted in Ariana's accidental death. At Ariana's funeral, he publicly confronted Albus and broke his nose. He has a strong unexplained affinity for goats. Rowling admitted in an interview, in response to a question by a reader, that Aberforth is the bartender Harry saw at the Hog's Head pub in Hogsmeade.[4] There are hints that Aberforth is the bartender appearing in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when Harry noted a "strong odour of goats" in the Hog's Head Inn (in the film version the bartender was seen with a goat), and that the barman looked familiar. Harry had earlier seen a photo of the Order of the Phoenix, which included Albus and Aberforth, and they look similar. Although not referred to as his brother, the Hog's Head bartender is mentioned in passing by Dumbledore as a source of information. Albus mentions in The Prisoner of Azkaban that Aberforth was arrested for 'perfoprming inappropriate charms' on a goat. Another link to his goat charming history is in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when he tries to convince the Death Eaters that Harry's patronus, a stag, was his own, which takes the form of a goat. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry sees Aberforth with Mundungus Fletcher, just outside the pub's door. Fletcher appears to be fencing goods stolen from Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place. Aberforth attends Albus's funeral at the end of Half-Blood Prince. However, it was not until Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that Aberforth was named directly. He plays an important role by allowing the resistance fighters to use a secure passageway from the Hog's Head to the Room of Requirement via his sister, Ariana's portrait (the same passage, according to Neville, was used by members of Dumbledore's Army to get food when they were living in the Room of Requirement). In addition, he purchased Sirius Black's two-way mirror from Mundungus,[5] and Harry briefly glimpses Aberforth's eye in its counterpart's remaining shard. Using the mirror to watch over the trio, Aberforth sends Dobby to rescue Harry, Ron, Hermione and some other prisoners from Malfoy Manor. He saves the trio again by taking them into his bar before the Death Eaters can arrest them. Aberforth left the Order of the Phoenix after believing the war against Voldemort was lost but remained indirectly supportive. Aberforth later reveals to Harry, Ron, and Hermione some facts they did not know about the history of the Dumbledore family. Shortly prior to the Second Battle of Hogwarts, he helped underage students escape the school to the Hog's Head. Despite Aberforth's cynicism regarding the Order of the Phoenix, he quickly joins the Battle of Hogwarts, and is last seen stunning Augustus Rookwood. According to Rowling, Aberforth survived the battle, and is still "at the Hog's Head, playing with his goats".[6]

Arabella Figg

Harry Potter character
Arabella Doreen Figg
Parentage Squib
Actor Kathryn Hunter
First appearance Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Arabella Doreen Figg, better known simply as Mrs Figg, is a fictional character in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. She surreptitiously watches over Harry Potter while he is at home with the family of his mother's sister, the Dursleys. She is a Chekhov's gun, first mentioned as a neighbour who takes care of Harry in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. She has a lifelong love of cats and often shows photos of her cats to Harry when he is sent to her house, much to his displeasure. Though she maintains a good Muggle cover, Mrs Figg is actually a Squib, a non-magical being born to a family of wizards, as is learned in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She does "a roaring trade" in crossbred cats and Kneazles, their magical variant. Mrs Figg even belongs to the Order of the Phoenix and functions as one of Albus Dumbledore's liaisons between the magical and Muggle worlds. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore refers to "Arabella Figg" as part of "the old crowd", giving the first clue to her identity. In Order of the Phoenix, she aids Harry after he and his cousin Dudley Dursley are attacked by two Dementors, and chooses to reveal herself to him. When the Ministry of Magic tries to have Harry expelled from Hogwarts for underage use of magic (which he did to save himself and Dudley) Mrs Figg's testimony before the Wizengamot is crucial in allowing Harry to stay at Hogwarts. She also reveals that she deliberately made Harry's stays with her unpleasant so that the Dursleys would continue to send him to her. According to J. K. Rowling's website, Squibs are actually incapable of seeing Dementors. However, Mrs Figg was familiar with the negative feelings caused by those creatures, so she was able to testify on Harry's behalf before the Wizengamot without committing perjury, although she apparently lied about being able to see the Dementors, as demonstrated by saying that the Dementors "ran", and then being corrected - Dementors don't run, they glide. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Mrs Figg attends Dumbledore's funeral at Hogwarts.

Mundungus Fletcher

Harry Potter character
Mundungus Fletcher
First appearance Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Mundungus "Dung" Fletcher is mentioned in passing in some of the earlier books of the series, but it was not until the second chapter of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that he made his first appearance. Fletcher is described as a "squat, unshaven man" with "short, bandy legs", "long, straggly ginger hair", and "bloodshot, baggy eyes that gave him the doleful look of a basset hound". Mundungus is a criminal, and many members of the Order have mixed feelings about him, but he is very loyal to Dumbledore, who apparently once got him out of serious trouble. Dumbledore trusts him enough to include him in the Order of The Phoenix, and his connections enable him to hear things that others do not— rumours and information rolling around the shadier segments of the wizarding population, which could potentially prove instrumental in the fight against Voldemort. As a member of both the original and the new Order of the Phoenix, he is assigned guard duty to protect Harry Potter, but abandons his position to conduct a shady cauldron-trading deal, leaving a critical opening through which Dementors sent by Dolores Umbridge manage to attack Harry and force him to use a Patronus, which was exactly Umbridge's plan. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Mundungus is first mentioned again by Molly Weasley, who discusses people "like Mundungus Fletcher" attempting to sell fraudulent products that promise protection from Death Eaters. Later in that book, Harry catches Mundungus outside of the Three Broomsticks trying to sell Sirius Black's property (which now belongs to Harry after Sirius' death) to Aberforth (who gave him a lifetime ban from the Hog's Head) and the boy confronts him. Mundungus goes into hiding but is later jailed in Azkaban for impersonating an Inferius during a botched robbery. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Mundungus, who was Confunded by Severus Snape, gives the idea of using the Polyjuice Potion to the Order of the Phoenix and helps with the escort of Harry from Privet Drive. He travels with Mad-Eye Moody on a broomstick and disapparates when Voldemort himself is shown to be present. It is later revealed by Kreacher that in addition to the property he stole from 12 Grimmauld Place in the previous book, he also took a heavy locket from the drawing room. The locket turns out to be the Slytherin's locket Horcrux. Kreacher is tasked with, and succeeds in capturing Mundungus (and in giving him a well-deserved blow on the head with a frying pan), who is forced to reveal the locket was taken from him by Dolores Umbridge. Following Snape's death, Harry finds out through the Pensieve that Mundungus helped Snape with Order business even after Snape killed Dumbledore, which did end up benefiting the anti-Voldemort cause.

Frank and Alice Longbottom

Harry Potter character
Frank and Alice Longbottom
Parentage Pure-blood
First appearance Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Frank and Alice Longbottom are the parents of Neville Longbottom, a Gryffindor boy in the same year as Harry Potter at Hogwarts. Along with Alastor Moody, they are remembered as being three of the greatest Aurors the Ministry ever had. According to Dumbledore, they had "thrice defied" Lord Voldemort by 1981. Their success, however, was cut short, as Frank and Alice were tortured into insanity with the Cruciatus Curse by a group of Death Eaters, led by Bellatrix Lestrange. His paternal grandmother raised Neville while his parents became permanently resident in a Closed Ward at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Their torture is remembered by the Order as one of the most horrific crimes committed by Voldemort's followers. Neville and his grandmother visit Frank and Alice over the holidays. Neither of them recognise him as their son, but Alice rather recognises Neville as someone she likes. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Alice gives Neville a Droobles bubble gum wrapper during his visit at Christmas break and Neville puts it in his pocket even though his grandmother tells him to throw it away, saying that he already has enough to, "wallpaper his bedroom". The significance of this incident was hotly debated by fans, but this debate has recently been put to rest in an interview with author J.K. Rowling, in which she stated the event has no further implications towards the plot of the story, but was merely based on events of a friend and his mother with Alzheimer's.[7]

Kingsley Shacklebolt

Harry Potter character
Kingsley Shacklebolt

George Harris as Kingsley Shacklebolt
in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Actor George Harris
First appearance Harry Potter and the
Order of the Phoenix

Kingsley Shacklebolt is a senior Auror, who was acting as informer for the Order within the Ministry of Magic when he was first introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when he volunteered to be one of the members of the Advance Guard that escorted Harry from the Dursleys' home to Number 12, Grimmauld Place. Kingsley was in charge of the search for Sirius Black in the Ministry - considered a prestigious job, as Sirius was the most wanted man in wizarding Britain. Knowing Sirius was innocent, he was supplying the Ministry false information that Sirius was in Tibet. He was present in the scene of the fifth book when Harry was confronted about Dumbledore's Army, after Marietta Edgecombe had betrayed it to Dolores Umbridge. Kingsley swiftly modified Marietta's memory, but to escape the Ministry, Dumbledore was forced to hex him too. Kingsley takes part in the battle at the Department of Mysteries, and appears to be very skilled at duelling as he is seen fighting two Death Eaters at once. However, after Sirius is killed, he continues the duel with Bellatrix Lestrange, during which Kingsley is hit by a spell that causes a "loud bang" and he hits the ground "yelling in pain". In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the new Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, appoints Kingsley to the Muggle Prime Minister's office. Posing as a secretary, Kingsley is actually the Prime Minister's guard, assigned to protect him from possible attacks by the Death Eaters. It is revealed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that Kingsley is the only wizard that the Dursleys seem to like, due to his skill at blending in well with Muggles. In that book, he continues to help battle Voldemort. He manages to send a timely warning to Bill and Fleur's wedding when Voldemort overthrows the Ministry of Magic, giving the guests a chance to escape. He continues to guard the Prime Minister, but is eventually forced to flee. He later is heard preaching equal rights for Muggles and Wizards on the radio show "Potterwatch" under the pseudonym "Royal". During the Battle of Hogwarts Kingsley duels, alongside Horace Slughorn and Minerva McGonagall, with Lord Voldemort himself. Kingsley is appointed (temporary) Minister for Magic following the death of Voldemort and the deposing of Voldemort's puppet ruler, Pius Thicknesse. However, it was later revealed by Rowling in an interview that Kingsley did become the new Minister for Magic permanently.[8] He revolutionised the Ministry of Magic: some of his accomplishments include removing the Dementors from Azkaban prison and advancing the Auror department, through appointing Harry as department head.

Nymphadora Tonks

Harry Potter character
Nymphadora Tonks
House Hufflepuff
Parentage Half-blood
Actor Natalia Tena
First appearance Harry Potter and the
Order of the Phoenix

Nymphadora Tonks is a Metamorphmagus, an Auror and a member of the Order of the Phoenix. She is described as having "...a pale heart-shaped face, dark twinkling eyes, and short spiky hair that was a violent shade of violet" after that description of her she changed her hair color to bubble-gum pink. Rowling also adds a comical side to Tonks's character: she is notoriously clumsy and unskilled at household spells, like cooking, cleaning, and setting the table, and frequently breaks things and trips. She despises her given name and prefers to be called by her surname alone. Tonks is an only child. Her mother is Andromeda Black, favourite cousin of Sirius Black and sister to Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy. She is therefore Draco Malfoy's first cousin. Andromeda's family, however, disowned her after she married Muggle-born wizard Ted Tonks, meaning that Nymphadora has had little contact with her extended family. Nymphadora studied at Hogwarts and was sorted into Hufflepuff.[9] The character later mentions that she left Hogwarts and began three years of Auror training. As a Metamorphmagus, she barely had to study for her Concealment and Disguise exam but had difficulty with Stealth and Tracking due to her clumsiness. Nevertheless, she qualifies as an Auror one year before her first appearance in the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Tonks is introduced early as a member of the Order in the fifth book. At the time, she, and senior Auror Kingsley Shacklebolt, were acting as spies for the Order at the Ministry. She helps to escort Harry first from the Dursleys' house to Order headquarters, and later to the Hogwarts Express. Tonks later fights the Death Eaters at the Department of Mysteries, in which she was injured by her aunt, Bellatrix Lestrange, and had to be taken to St Mungo's hospital. During Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Tonks is stationed at Hogsmeade and assigned to guard Hogwarts. Harry observes she is constantly depressed, rarely smiling or acting friendly. Her hair, normally a vibrant pink, was always a mousy brown colour, her abilities as a Metamorphmagus were also disturbed, and her Patronus changed some time after the battle from its original form to a large, silvery, four-legged animal. Such changes were held to be evidence of extreme shock or strong emotions. However, after Albus Dumbledore's death, it is revealed that Tonks had fallen in love with Remus Lupin, and her Patronus had, as a result of this, changed to the form of a werewolf - a creature that Remus turned into every full moon. When he was reluctant to return her affections (believing that he was too old, too poor and it was too dangerous for her to be involved with a werewolf), her depression muted her magical abilities. However, at Dumbledore's funeral, Tonks and Lupin are seen holding hands and Tonks's hair has returned to her favoured pink, signifying that she is happy again. Early in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Tonks accompanies twelve Order members to take Harry from the Dursleys' home to The Burrow, and before they leave the Dursleys' home, she announces that she recently married Remus Lupin. She flies with Ron, who impersonates Harry using Polyjuice Potion, as a decoy to have Death Eaters thrown off the real Harry's trail. During the aerial battle against Death Eaters, she fought Bellatrix once again, and injured her husband, Rodolphus Lestrange. Later in the book, Remus reveals Tonks is pregnant. Remus briefly left Tonks, as he believed he had caused her to be shunned by the wizarding society due to him being a werewolf - but he soon comes to his senses and reunites with her. She gives birth to Teddy Lupin, named after Tonks's father, Harry is named godfather to the child. When the Death Eaters attack Hogwarts to get Harry, Tonks and Lupin join the defenders of Hogwarts to hold off the Death Eaters in order to buy Harry time to find and destroy one of Voldemort's Horcruxes. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Tonks is killed by Bellatrix, and Lupin is killed by Dolohov, leaving Teddy an orphan left in the care of Tonks's mother Andromeda.[10] In an interview shortly after the release of Deathly Hallows, Rowling confessed that she had originally planned Tonks and Lupin to have survive the series ending, but had to kill them after she spared Arthur Weasley in Order of the Phoenix.
