Newton is a town in Dale County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 1,708. Newton was the county seat of Dale County until 1870, when Ozark replaced it.

Geography

Newton is located at 31°20′40″N, 85°35′34″W (31.344452, -85.592702)GR1. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 14.3 square miles (37.1 km²), of which, 14.3 square miles (37.0 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.21%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,708 people, 693 households, and 510 families residing in the town. The population density was 119.5 people per square mile (46.1/km²). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 55.3/sq mi (21.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 82.20% White, 15.52% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 1.93% from two or more races. 1.23% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 693 households out of which 31.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.93. In the town the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males. The median income for a household in the town was $33,021, and the median income for a family was $35,795. Males had a median income of $28,924 versus $19,559 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,263. About 13.3% of families and 13.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.8% of those under age 18 and 8.5% of those age 65 or over.
