The Neue Deutsche Härte (New German hardness) is a direction in hard rock/metal music that developed in the German speaking world in the 1990s that was inspired by industrial metal/electronica sounds. The combination of deep, clean vocals with a sound based on heavily distorted electric guitar and drums also usually includes keyboard and the use of synthesisers, samples, and sometimes drum-machines.

Origins
Several bands were important to the eventual sound, but OOMPH! are generally considered to be the original NDH-band, starting with their second album, Sperm. Another important early NDH band was Fleischmann.
Tanz-Metall
NDH-band Rammstein have described their genre "Tanz-Metall" (a literal translation of "Dance metal"). Their high use of synthesizers, samples and keyboard scores often give the band a theme reminiscent of electronica, as evident on their 1997 song, Du hast (German pun; Du hast = "You have", Du hasst = "You hate", both are spoken identically).
Increasing popularity
NDH's sales has been increasing in Germany and the United States. Rammstein has achieved nearly 12 million in sales, Joachim Witt has sold nearly 1 million, other German artists are experiencing rising demand too.
