Nestor Project (Nestor stands for Neutrino Extended Submarine Telescope with Oceanographic Research) An international scientific collaboration whose target is the deployment of a neutrino telescope on the sea floor off Pylos, Greece.

Contents

Neutrino

Neutrinos are elementary particles first discovered in the 1950's long after their theoretical prediction by the famous theorist Wolfgang Pauli. Their special feature is the difficulty of their detection.

Nestor Telescope

In Nestor, a titanium star-like frame is used in order to house the "eyes" of the telescope, which are glass balls containing photomultiplier tubes (a device that can detect light). The frames are positioned on the sea floor, in order to reduce the noise produced in the telescope due to cosmic rays. Many frames compose a Nestor tower. So far one frame has been deployed and the program is on-going.
