Background

Origins

The product of years of research by the Umbrella Corporation's 6th Research Lab in Europe[1], the "Nemesis Project" was first conceived as a powerful bio-weapon that would be capable of following orders. The Umbrella research team stationed at the Spencer Mansion in America believed that the solution to a controllable Tyrant should be digital (eventually resulting in the creation of the Talos). The European team, however, believed that the solution should be organic, and so Nemesis was created by using an Ne-a parasite to regulate its Tyrant base. A sample specimen of the Nemesis parasite was later shipped to the Arklay facility under the request of chief researchers Albert Wesker and William Birkin, the latter taking some talking to before finally going along with the shipment. From there, Wesker and William Birkin conducted several experiments on the parasite. In the most notable of these experiments, the scientists injected the parasite into the body of Lisa Trevor, Umbrella’s long-time guinea pig. In addition to the successful completion of the Nemesis, these experiments allowed William Birkin to discover and develop the G-Virus. There were originally four Nemesis' created. One was shipped to Rockfort Island and stored there in case of an emergency. Another was sent to Raccoon City and is the Nemesis featured in Resident Evil 3, this model was named the Nemesis-T02, and also happened to be the one with the longest period of training.[2]. The third model was kept for further testing. The last model ended up trying to break free, forcing the researchers to dispose of it. The Nemesis line of tyrants are based off of the mass produced line of T-103 tyrants from the Sheena Island mass-production program, indeed being T-103's implanted with the Nemesis parastie. They are not, as speculated, some of the 10 clones of Sergei Vladmir.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Nemesis is the title character and main antagonist in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. The Umbrella Corporation deploys Nemesis to hunt and murder the remaining members of Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.). One first encounters the creature outside of Raccoon City’s police department, where it brutally murders Brad Vickers. Nemesis will continue to pursue and confront the player’s character, Jill Valentine, through various parts of the game. Nemesis, draped in a trench coat, will attack the player with a rocket launcher, hands and tentacles throughout the game. A player can injure Nemesis through weapons fire and later industrial strength acid. Throughout the course of the game, the detrimental effects of the NE-T virus twist Nemesis’ physical build. After having its trenchcoat burned off, Nemesis's tentacles will grow larger on the right arm. Later, after being decapitated and falling in acid, the player will finally encounter Nemesis as a grotesque digestive organ with disfigured limbs. While lacking the dexterity and attack power it once had, Nemesis is more resilient.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles

The Nemesis appeared again in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, reprising its role in the final section of the "Raccoon's Destruction" scenario, a chapter based on the events of Resident Evil 3. Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira encounter the Nemesis at various points throughout the scenario. The Nemesis fights in hand to hand combat as well with its trademark missile launcher. As in its original incarnation, the Nemesis's trenchcoat is eventually burned off (though this happens in the Raccoon Police Department rather than the clock tower), revealing its "Tentacle Nemesis" form. The Tentacle Nemesis will use its tentacles as a whip to capture the player and drag it near for an attack. When defeated, it topples from the roof of the RPD and is presumably annihilated in the ensuing destruction of Raccoon City. The final, heavily mutated form of the Nemesis does not make an appearance.

Nemesis was mentioned at the end of the 2002 film Resident Evil, and later appeared in the 2004 film Resident Evil: Apocalypse, where he was portrayed by Matthew G. Taylor. In the film's continuity Nemesis is formerly Matt Addison one of the two survivors of the first film (alongside Alice) where he becomes infected after being scratched by a licker. As in the third game he is unleashed into the city to kill the remaining S.T.A.R.S. members as a sort of test of his programming. This, however, changes once he encounters Alice at which point Timothy Cain announces that the Nemesis-program is officially activated. Alice and the Nemesis are forced into a final fight together near the end but Alice refuses to kill him remembering that Nemesis used to be Matt. The Nemesis then remembers Alice after Cain calls him a dead-end of evolution. When he is told to kill Alice he instead kills the men guarding her and allows the heroes to fight back. He is eventually killed trying to save Alice's life by shooting down a helicopter with his rocket launcher. He is crushed to death by the falling debris. Unlike the game version the Nemesis does not use tentacles but instead an arm-mounted minigun is added to his arsenal aside his regular rocket launcher. In Resident Evil: Extinction, Dr. Sam Isaacs mutates into a Tyrant similar to the Nemesis seen in the games. As a Tyrant, Issacs possessed a mass of tentacles instead of a right arm, had accelerated healing to the point of near-instantaneous recovery from wounds, and was capable of speech and possessed Issacs' intelligence and memories.
