Music of Macedonia is the music of Macedonia, which is a geographical region of Southeastern Europe now divided among Greece, Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria with minor parts in Albania and Serbia.

Traditional folk music

Traditional folklore music which can be rural or urban includes: Lyric songs, Epic songs, Labour songs, Ritual songs, Humorous songs, Folk dance ("oro"), old urban music (starogradska muzika), the old Čalgija style (not to be confused with chalga) etc. Popular songs are Kaleš bre Andjo, Biljana platno beleše, Dafino vino crveno, Narode Makedonski and many others. Rhythms from this region tend to be rhythmically very complex. Often referenced oro dances are Teškoto (video) from the village of Galičnik, Kalajdžiskoto (video), Komitskoto (The Dance of the Komiti freedom fighters) and others. The most eminent professional folklore association is Tanec.

Classical music

The Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra was established in 1944. During the 1950s the first Macedonian ballet by Gligor Smokvarski and the opera "Goce" by Kiril Makedonski were shown. Another notable composer is Todor Skalovski. Some of the most prominent classical music performers include the pianist Simon Trpčeski and the opera singers Boris Trajanov and Blagoj Nacoski. All of the mentioned are internationaly acclaimed.

Pop

Popular pop music performers in Republic of Macedonia include: Toše Proeski, Karolina Gočeva, Kaliopi, Elena Ristevska, Tamara Todevska, Lambe Alabakoski, Jovan Jovanov and others. Notable producer involved in the pop music scene is Darko Dimitrov.

Eurovision Song Contest

Rock

The most influential band in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (and one of the most popular in former Yugoslavia) is Leb i Sol. They combined rock with fusion jazz and Macedonian folk elements creating a distinct sound. After they broke up, their frontman the guitar hero Vlatko Stefanovski started a successful solo carrier. In 2006 they reformed for a tour across former Yugoslavia.

Alternative scene

Notable acts: Mizar, Arhangel (postpunk, darkwave, gothic rock), Anastasia (authors of the soundtrack for Before the Rain), Superhiks (ska punk), Two Sides (hardcore punk), Sanatorium (thrash metal) and others.

Electronic scene

The most prominent electronic musicians are Kiril Džajkovski, the group PMG Collective and others.
