Murrue Ramius (マリュー・ラミアス Maryū Ramiasu?) is a fictional character from the anime series, Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny. Murrue is thrust into the role of the captain of the Earth Alliance assault ship Archangel, after the ship's original commanding officers are killed during a ZAFT assault on the Heliopolis space colony.[2]

Gundam SEED

Lieutenant Murrue Ramius is one of the Earth Alliance Forces soldiers stationed at the Orb colony Heliopolis, where the Earth Alliance's new mobile suits were being built. When ZAFT discovered this operation and four out of five mobile suits were taken, Ramius took control of the remaining GAT-X105 Strike, along with Kira Yamato. However, she was incapable of piloting it properly against a ZGMF-1017 GINN piloted by Miguel Aiman. Kira took control of the Strike and rewrote its OS for combat efficiency. After defeating Miguel, Murrue had to pull a gun on Kira and his friends because they came into contact with a military secret. She had them retrieve the launcher striker pack which would later be used by the Strike to fend off Rau Le Creuset. Assuming command of the Archangel at the suggestion of Ensign Natarle Badgiruel, Lieutenant Ramius is a competent commanding officer with a good grasp of her crew's and her ship's capabilities. While she initially suggests that Lieutenant Mu La Flaga, the most senior officer present, should command the ship, he declines because his role as one of the ship's only pilots means he cannot stay on the bridge. He also suggests that since Murrue has been involved with the creation of the ship and the mobile suits it will be carrying and fighting against, she would have the best knowledge of their capabilities. As a commanding officer she has the "good cop" attitude opposite Natarle's "bad cop" attitude. Promoted to lieutenant commander when the Archangel rendezvouses with Rear Admiral Lewis Halberton's 8th Fleet, Murrue and the Archangel descends to the Earth's surface and lands in Africa, fighting her way through ZAFT forces commanded by Andrew Waltfeld. After an extended repair stopover in the Orb Union, the Archangel finally makes its way to the Earth Alliance base JOSH-A in Alaska, arriving several months after leaving Heliopolis. Captain Ramius deserts the Earth Alliance Forces after the Atlantic Federation's betrayal at the Battle of JOSH-A. Reunited with Kira Yamato – now piloting the stolen ZGMF-X10A Freedom – Murrue and the Archangel join the Orb forces at the Battle of Orb, trying to defend the island from the Earth Alliance attack. Just before Orb's leaders self-destruct its mass driver, Archangel and Orb's battleship Kusanagi launch into space. At the Mendel colony they join forces with the stolen support ship Eternal, a ZAFT renegade group led by Lacus Clyne and Andrew Waltfeld. United against the escalation of violence by both ZAFT and the Earth Alliance, they form the Three Ships Alliance. In the Second Battle of Jachin Due, the Three Ships Alliance helps end the war. Over the course of the war, Murrue forms a romantic relationship with Mu La Flaga. It is indicated by some of Murrue's dialogue with Mu, particularly in Gundam SEED episode 48, that in the past she loved a mobile armor pilot who was killed in action. On the final day of the war, Mu is apparently killed protecting the Archangel from her sister ship the Dominion's "Lohengrin" positron blaster cannon attack. In grief and rage, Murrue orders the Archangel to return fire, destroying the Dominion and killing its captain, her former friend and first officer of the Archangel, Lieutenant Commander Natarle Badgiruel, along with Blue Cosmos leader Muruta Azrael.

After the Bloody Valentine War, Murrue Ramius is commissioned into the Orb military. She lives in the Orb Union with Andrew Waltfeld, whose lover Aisha was killed in a battle with Kira Yamato during the previous war. After the fall of the Junius Seven colony forces Kira and Lacus Clyne to move in with Murrue and Andrew, the two adults help take care of the orphans from Reverend Malchio's orphanage, as well as becoming bodyguards for Lacus. Under the assumed name of Maria Bernes,[1] she works as the head of Morgenroete's "ship building division B", alongside Kojiro Murdoch and possibly other former Archangel crew members. She meets Talia Gladys, when the Minerva's repairs are assigned to her department. During the Second Bloody Valentine War, she and Talia face each other in battle on several occasions. After the departure of Minerva, Murrue, Andrew, and Kira thwart an assassination attempt on Lacus. Afterwards, Murrue and the others reunite with many of the original Archangel crew, and flee from Orb in the refitted Archangel. At the time, Andrew is her superior officer so she offers the command of the Archangel to him. He declines stating that this was her ship and he needed to focus on being one of the ship's pilots, the same excuse given by Murrue's lover, Mu La Flaga in the previous war. Murrue once again assumes command of the vessel. Before leaving Orb territory, they "kidnap" Cagalli Yula Athha from her political wedding with Yuna Roma Seiran. Once out of Orb territory, Murrue and the rest of the Archangel crew begin their mission to stop the war. Since the end of the first Bloody Valentine War, Murrue has grown fond of Kira and sees him as a younger brother, taking time to offer advice to Kira when they are alone. Murrue helps to keep Kira's spirits up when Lacus leaves the Archangel to coordinate Terminal's efforts in space. Murrue is reunited with her presumed-dead lover Mu La Flaga when Kira captures Earth Alliance officer Neo Roanoke who turns out to be an amnesiac Mu, rescued and given a new identity by Logos. Murrue promptly burst into tears when he did not recognize her. Mu's memories of Murrue fully return when he saves her and the Archangel from the Minerva's "Tannhäuser" positron blaster cannon by using his mobile suit as a shield, much like he did in the previous war. This time, Mu survives without a scratch, thanks to his ORB-01 Akatsuki's reflective beam coating, which allows the Akatsuki to disperse most of the positron blast, while the remainder is blocked by the Akatsuki's beam barrier. Mu then promises to never leave Murrue again and states they should hurry up and finish the battle so they can go home, to which Murrue happily agrees. At the end of Gundam SEED Destiny: Special Edition, Murrue and Mu are seen together at Orb, watching the sunset.

Rank

In Gundam SEED and most of Gundam SEED Destiny, Murrue is referred to as a captain (kanchou in Japanese) while during that period of time, her true rank is lieutenant and later on lieutenant commander[2] (tai-i and shousa in Japanese, respectively). The term captain in this case refers to a nautical title customarily given to a person in charge of a ship, namely the Archangel. At the end of Gundam SEED Destiny, she is promoted to the naval rank of captain (taisa in Japanese) in the Orb military.
