Character History

Danton Black was the assistant of a nuclear reactor for the Hudson Nuclear Facility. Having a fellow employee steal his designs, Black accused the Nuclear Regulations Council of discrediting him of building an unsafe nuclear reactor. This reactor gave him his powers when it exploded. While the explosion gave Ron Raymond and Martin Stein the power of fusion, it gave Danton Black the power of fission. His powers enable him to create multiple copies of himself (although, the more copies he creates of himself, the smaller in stature each copy is). He gained his powers in the same accident that gave Firestorm his nuclear powers. He originally worked as an operative of the 2000 Committee under the command of Henry Hewitt, and kidnapped Lorraine Reilly (Firehawk) while acting under Hewitt's orders.

Current status

Although believed killed by the Parasite in Firestorm Annual #5 (1987), he has recently reappeared to fight against current Firestorm Jason Rusch. He was seen as a member of the most recent Secret Society of Super Villains when Black Adam threatened to kill him if he didn't. Multiplex was mentioned as being deceased in 'Justice League of America #1 by Felix Faust, then was seen posing as Deadman in order to get the Red Tornado to claim the body of a brain-dead duplicate. Given Faust's ulterior motives, the claim of Multiplex's death is suspect. At the 2007 San Francisco Wondercon, Dan Didio said that one of the characters featured in the upcoming Suicide Squad would be Multiplex. Whether this is the original Multiplex or a new one was not mentioned. [1] In the January 2008 issue of Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller confirms that the Multiplex on the Squad is Danton Black. His duplicates serve her as office employees until she gets staffed.

Powers and abilities

  • Power of nuclear fission and mass duplication, able to create multiple copies of himself.
  • Flight.
  • Also has limited super strength and durability.
