In 2001, Alien Ant Farm released "Movies" as their second single from the album, ANThology. It did not chart as well as their previous hit, "Smooth Criminal" (a cover of the Michael Jackson song), but did fairly well in the UK and on the US Rock charts.

Music video

Originally, "Movies" was supposed to be the lead single, which would explain why two of its music videos were made before "Smooth Criminal" 's. There are currently three known versions of a music video for "Movies." The first debuted in January of 2001 and was directed by Tamra Davis [1]. It features the band performing at a what looks like a frat party, complete with toilet paper being thrown everywhere. The band sees four attractive girls come in, and each band member subsequently fantasizes about one of the girls, until something in the fantasy goes horribly wrong. (Tye's girl has a snake tongue, Terry's girl ties him up with her hair, Dryden's girl appears to really be a man, and Mike's girl has snake hair like Medusa.) Once their set is done, the boys are leaving the frat house when they see the four creepy girls, and fling themselves into their van to speed away. The second debuted in March of 2001 and was directed by Marcos Siega[1]. it features the band performing and goofing off in front of a screen that's flashing all kinds of old movies and movie previews and in front of a Hollywood sign. It also highlights behind the scenes stuff, to coincide with making a movie, such as make-up being done, camera angles and lighting being checked, and cords all over. It even has "The End" at the conclusion, like an old-time 40s or 50s movie. The third debuted in December of 2001 and was directed by Marc Klasfeld[1]. This version is most well-known among viewers. It begins with the band at the movies. Dryden jumps into the movie screen, and the rest of the band soon follows. From there, they play the song and enact famous movies, such as "Ghostbusters" (shooting a kid with their instruments), "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (as Oompa-Loompas), "Edward Scissorhands" (with Mike cutting a guy's fro to say "AAF"), and "The Karate Kid" (with a special appearance by Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) healing Dryden's injury.) At the end, the entire audience hops in the movie with them. This version also features a longer intro.
