Montezuma is a village in Mercer County, Ohio, United States. The population was 191 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Montezuma is located at 40°29′20″N, 84°32′55″W (40.488768, -84.548582)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²), all of it land. Montezuma is located near Grand Lake St. Marys.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 191 people, 71 households, and 48 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,660.7 people per square mile (614.5/km²). There were 80 housing units at an average density of 695.6/sq mi (257.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.43% White, and 1.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.57% of the population. There were 71 households out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 23.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.12. In the village the population was spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.8 males. The median income for a household in the village was $41,094, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $19,583 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,917. About 2.6% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.0% of those under the age of eighteen and none of those sixty five or over.

Interesting Facts

Montezuma is the home of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Parish [est. 1904]. The mascot for the church's basketball teams is the muskrat. Heavy construction began in the fall of 2007 in downtown Montezuma along State Route 219. This caused severe local traffic problems, as many motorists took unmarked detours though narrow alleys in residential Montezuma. Construction was completed by December 2007.
