MonoDevelop is a popular, open source integrated development environment for the Linux platform, primarily targeted for the development of software that uses both the Mono and Microsoft .NET framework. MonoDevelop integrates features similar to that of Eclipse and Microsoft's Visual Studio such as "Intellisense", source control integration, and an integrated GUI and Web designer. It currently has language support for C#, Java, Boo, Nemerle, Visual Basic.NET, CIL, and C++.

History

In late 2003, a few developers from the Mono community began migrating SharpDevelop, a successful .NET open source IDE from System.Windows.Forms on Windows to Gtk# on Linux. Being an early fork of SharpDevelop, MonoDevelop has very little in common architecturally from recent SharpDevelop releases. Over time, the MonoDevelop project was absorbed into the rest of the Mono project and is actively maintained by Novell and the Mono community. Since Mono 1.0 Beta 2, MonoDevelop is bundled with Mono releases.
