A Modular Power Supply Unit, or "MPS", is a term for a computer's power supply in which the user can choose which of the detachable power connectors to install between the computer's components and the computer power supply. Many MPS sold, may have UV-reactive or LED producing components in them, such as the detachable cables or the unit itself. Some companies such as Kingwin and Ultra Products have patented this idea for consumer market.[1][2]
Benefits
By allowing cables to be detached, the clutter of unused power connectors that may damage other components, such as fans, or that may just be a hassle to move around within the computer's case can be eliminated. Also, by removing unneeded cables, these devices, when installed in wholesale computers, are more cost-effective to companies and consumers.
Criticisms
Modular cables and connectors add electrical resistance between the power supply and the hardware components, which can affect the performance of the power supply.[3]
