Overview

Formed in the outskirts of Evansville,Indiana in 1993, Mock Orange was made up of members Ryan Grisham (guitar and vocals) Joe Asher (guitar and backing vocals) Heath Metzger (drums) and Brendon Chapell (bass). Mock Orange’s first release was in 1995 entitled Open Sunday. In 1997, they released a self titled album sometimes referred to as The Green Record. Both albums were released on Minus 7 Records. The band would later publicly express dislike of these albums saying they were just goofing around to see what they could do.^[1] In 1998, Mock Orange signed with Lobster Records for the release of the album Nines and Sixes. Upon realizing their increased recognition they took on a less juvenile approach and changed their sound. In the year 2000, Mock Orange worked on and recorded their album The Record Play. They toured extensively throughout the United States and Japan in support of these records. This brought about a Japan only release titled Amplified, which constited of 5 songs each from the two previous albums. With their growing popularity in 2002 the band were asked by Hardy Emery owner of Dead Droid Records to join in on a compilation Weezer cover record titled Rock Music: A Tribute to Weezer. They covered the song “Only in Dreams.” It is during this time that Mock Orange would lose member Brendon Chapell due to family obligations. This would not stop them however and with a new sound, song ideas, and Bassist Zach Grace they recorded an EP titled First EP also released under the Dead Droid label. In January of 2003 shortly after the EP’s release Mock Orange expanding on their new found sound recorded Mind is not Brain. Having difficulties with Dead Droid they looked to Silverthree Records and over a year and a half after it was recorded, Mind is Not Brain was released. In 2005, Mock Orange toured Japan with Japanese label mates The Band Apart. According to their own message boards both bands worked on a Split EP that will contain 2 new songs from each of them. At the present this release will be Japan only with a small chance of US release. It has also been noted that lead vocalist and guitarist Ryan has recorded a solo work with no immediate release date.
