Biography
Early life and family
Kerr was born as an Australian with a Japanese, Siberian, Turkish, Filipino and Indian background on April 20, 1985[1] in Gunnedah, New South Wales a small rural town to Therese and John Kerr. She has a younger brother named Matthew. During her childhood, Kerr revealed she "raced motorbikes and rode horses on [my] grandmother’s farm" and describes her early life in the Australian countryside as "very grounding ... there wasn’t any pretentiousness and no one really cared what you were wearing. You could just be you."[4]
Education
Kerr graduated from All Hallows' School and planned to study nutrition before pursuing modeling.[4]
Career
Early career
At thirteen, Kerr entered and won the 1997 annual Dolly Magazine/Impulse Model Competition and was flown to Sydney a week before her fourteenth birthday to shoot for the magazine. Upon winning, local media expressed 'concerned outrage' at her young age and rose concern about the glorification of young girls within the entertainment industry, suggesting her youthful covers in skimpy attire constituted soft-core pornography.[4] Media publications also took her youth as an opportunity to debate the objectification of young girls within the fashion and beauty industry,[4] with some conservative media outlets claiming her Dolly shoot (including images of fourteen year old Kerr in bathing suits) constituted pedophilia. Of the press, Kerr said:
| “ | In the media at the time they were trying to cling on to anything remotely to do with paedophilia. Dolly is a magazine for teenage girls, not for old men. And I was fully clothed! Doing a winter shoot! They just made something out of nothing."[3] | ” |
Following the mixed-reactions to her break-out Dolly Magazine fashion spread, Kerr chose to pursue modeling part-time while studying, however as her local fame increased, Kerr was forced to continually defend her professional choices against the continuing public backlash and suffered emotional distress following the death of her high-school boyfriend during her final year of schooling. Eventually overcoming the trauma, Kerr signed to Chadwick Models Melbourne Division after graduating high-school, followed by Chic Model Management Sydney Division and found modeling success in both her native Australia and in Japan before relocating to New York after a series of beach-ware campaigns, predominantly for Australian surf chain Billabong (in which Kerr modeled for surf brands Tigerlily, Roxy, Billabong Girls and One Teaspoon) receiving commercial exposure in both the Australian and Asian markets.[2][3][4]
Established career
Following a multitude of runway appearances, Kerr signed with Next model agency in early 2004 and was immediately booked for runway and print campaigns for Baby Phat, Lisa Ho, Voodoo Dolls, Levi's, Bettina Liano, Nicola Finetti, L.A.M.B, Heatherette, Betsey Johnson, Trelise Cooper, Jets, John Richmond, Blumarine Swimwear, Seafolly Swimwear, Anna Molinari, Roberto Cavalli, Enrico Coveri, Arden B, Cia Maritima, Amuleti J and appeared frequently in the televised Victoria's Secret runway parades. Kerr was also booked for print in magazines such as Elle, Oyster, Madison, Australian Vogue andHarpers Bazaar and was featured in television adverts for brands such as Portmans, Bonds and Veet.[3][4] In 2006, Kerr broke the US market when she signed a lucrative cosmetics contract with Maybelline New York, the campaign running in a series of internationally sold women's beauty magazines including Cosmopolitan, CLEO and ELLE and was eventually featured in Victoria's Secret catalogues.[4] Following her success with Maybelline,[4] Kerr became the first Australian model to be offered a contract with Victoria's Secret and upon her acceptance, became the first ever Australian Victoria's Secret Angel and a featured model on the companies internationally accessed website, joining the stable of prestige models already signed to the lingerie giant including Gisele Bundchen, Alessandra Ambrosio, Adriana Lima, Selita Ebanks, and Heidi Klum. Her increasing popularity as one of the globally recognized Angels led Kerr to be featured in the Victoria's Secret 2006 and 2007 televised runway shows, aired in North America, Australasia, Europe, South America and the United Kingdom.[4] Most recently, Kerr has signed as the face of Californian fashion retailer Arden B. After debuting in their Spring and Summer ad campaigns, Kerr returned for their Fall 2007 campaign, shot by fashion photographer Diego Uchitel.[5][3] and currently became the new face of Clinique Happy.
Filmography
Kerr (and several other Victoria's Secret and Next agency models) was featured in a music video for American hip-hop stars Kanye West and Pharrell Williams single Number One. Kerr was also featured in a 2006 music video for then boyfriend Jay G Lyon's band Tamarama's independently released single Everything To Me. Following her modeling success with Victoria's Secret, Kerr made a small guest appearance in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother alongside fellow Victoria's Secret Angels Adriana Lima, Marisa Miller, Heidi Klum and Selita Ebanks.[3]
Other
Currently, Kerr is writing an inspirational self-esteem self-help book called Treasure Yourself aimed at the female teenage demographic. Kerr says, "Basically, it's a whole lot of information that I've found, that has helped me. If I can help one girl by doing this then I've reached my purpose."[6]
Public image
Reception
Kerr is dubbed "the next MacPherson" and generates a high volume of interest in both the Australasian, European and American markets. Kerr's model trademark are her dimples. Celebrity photographer Russel James said of Kerr,[4] "The US has fallen in love with her. We love her because she has the most incredible girl-next-door look and she’s also insanely beautiful. It means women are not intimidated by her looks and guys think they might be able to talk to her. It’s a fantastic combination ... people want to be around her; she’s fun on a shoot ... and she’s not stupid, which can be a very annoying trait among some models." Model agent Ursula Hufnagl described Kerr as "the perfect endorsement", citing her ability to "truly sell a product."[4]
Charity
Kerr's charitable work includes Wildlife Warriors Worldwide and Children International.[6]
Personal life
In 2003, Kerr began dating finance broker Adrian Camilleri. Following an Australian Securities and Investments Commission investigation, Camilleri was found guilty on five counts of fraudulent behavior spanning between February 2003 to February 2004 and Kerr subsequently dissolved the relationship. Reports claim Kerr suffered financially "after taking her boyfriend's financial advice" but chose not to take legal action.[7] In 2005, Kerr began dating Australian musician and model Jay G Lyon and played the love interest in a music video for Lyon's band Tamarama, they lived together in Kerr's New York apartment for two years. The couple ended their relationship in mid 2007 after spending three years together. During the relationship, tabloids suggested Kerr had been unfaithful and printed social pictures taken of Kerr and actor Orlando Bloom and claimed her relationship with Lyon's was "in trouble." Tabloids later speculated that Kerr was also being pursued by actor Steven Dorff and a wealthy New York based lawyer who showered her with expensive gifts after meeting her at a social function. During 2006 and early 2007, speculations escalated and the media claimed Kerr and Lyon had split as a direct result of Bloom.[8] However, Kerr maintains that the two are just friends. Kerr is a recent Buddhist convert and says she was "inspired" by long-time friend and actress Eliska Sursova. Kerr practices Nichiren Buddhism - a Japanese branch of the Buddhist religion - and believes "we have a responsibility to bring peace and harmony to our lives and the world." As part of her Nichiren beliefs, Kerr chants every morning and night for 20 minutes, practises yoga, meditates and reads widely on spirituality.[4] In late 2007, Kerr revealed her "distaste" for American socialite Paris Hilton claiming Hilton had previously stolen one of Kerr's designated runway ensembles minutes before a Heatherette fashion show. Though the argument received international media attention and was depicted as Kerr and Hilton's first argument, sources revealed both women had previously clashed following Kerr's social friendships with Hilton's previous fiance, Paris Latsis and Hilton's close friend oil-heir Brandon Davis. Published reports documented several encounters between Hilton and Kerr (including a one-time run in at Hollywood restaurant Mr. Chow's; whilst Kerr dined with Eliska Sursova, Hilton asked a member of her entourage to escort Kerr outside when she [Hilton] arrived, however Mr. Chow's staff did not oblige Hilton's request) and suspect Hilton's jealousy is catalyst.[9][10] According to a Victoria's Secret profile on Kerr, posted on the CBS YouTube page, Kerr's described her take on life as "enjoying wherever it is [I am] and trying to be in the moment as much as possible.[6]
