Middle finger
Middle finger
Latin digitus medius
Dorlands/Elsevier d_18/12296657

The middle finger (or the long finger) is the third digit of the human hand and usually the longest finger, located between the index finger and the ring finger. It is also called the third finger, digitus medius, digitus tertius, or digitus III in anatomy. In many Western countries extending the middle finger and pointing it upward is widely recognized as saying "Fuck you." This comes from the Roman Empire, when a prisoner would be sentenced to death by the Emperor. If the Emperor gave the prisoner a thumbs up, he would live. If he pointed his thumb towards his throat, the prisoner would give the Emperor the finger in return.
