MELiSSA (Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative) is a European Space Agency project which aims to develop the technology required for a future biological life support system for long term manned space missions. MELiSSA utilizes Co2 and waste from the crew of a spacecraft and turns it into breathable air and food. This feat is accomplished through the use of bacteria and plants. The research and development of MELiSSA technologies is performed in collaboration with the European Space Agency and 8 partners. Currently, there are 8 technologies which can be classified into: - Water Recycling Technology
- Waste and Fiber Degradation Technology
- Air Regeneration Technology
- Biological Sensory Technology
Generally all technologies are considered to be in the cleantech area and can be applied for instance in water treatment plants, lifestock farms (manure processing) and airplanes.
Technology transfer and valorization activities are in the hands of IPStar BV.
