McGhee Tyson Airport (IATA: TYS, ICAO: KTYS, FAA LID: TYS) is a public airport serving the Knoxville, Tennessee, metropolitan area. It is located in Alcoa, Tennessee, approximately 12 miles (19 km) south of downtown Knoxville. The airport is named for Navy pilot McGhee Tyson, lost on patrol in World War I. Commercial service is provided by several major airlines and connection carriers. The airport also serves as a base for the 134th Air Refueling Wing, part of the Tennessee Air National Guard. The Wing operates KC-135 Stratotankers for aerial refueling of military aircraft. Adjacent to the McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base is the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment Army Aviation Support Facility which operates several OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopters. On December 21, 2007, Allegiant Air cited high fuel costs as it announced that it would discontinue service to Las Vegas on February 25, 2008.[1] Prior to the extreme escalation of the price of fuel, Knoxville was one of Allegiant's strongest Las Vegas markets. Allegiant Air will still offer Knoxville travelers nonstop flights to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando-Sanford, and St. Petersburg/Clearwater on full size jet equipment at low fares.
