Marshall is a historic, unincorporated village in Fauquier County, Virginia. Marshall was originally known as Salem. The town became Marshall after a short-lived incorporation. Marshall is named after John Marshall, the former United States Supreme Court Chief Justice. The village is centered around State Route 55 and U.S. Route 17. Marshall also has two exits on Interstate 66. Although Marshall has historically been an agricultural community, sprawl from the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area has recently led to demographic changes, as a number of commuters who work in the D.C. area have settled in the town. Marshall is home to Marshall Middle School which is unique among the schools in Fauquier County because it follows the schedule for the elementary rather than for the secondary schools. It has a different bell schedule as well. Marshall is also home to the One Room School House PS17 which was the last one-room to close in the 1960s. It has been renovated and school groups often visit.
