Markham was a 1959-60 television series which aired in the U.S. on CBS. Markham starred Ray Milland as private investigator Roy Markham, who was also a qualified attorney. Markham had enjoyed some considerable success during the period of his life in which he was actively practicing law, which meant that he could take on cases primarily based on whether they interested him, and his fees could vary from the very considerable ones charged to his wealthier and corporate clients to nothing at all for those who desperately needed his services but were unable to pay. Markham's cases could take him almost anywhere in the world, although he was based in New York City. In the early episodes of this program, Markham had an assistant, John Riggs (Simon Scott), but the Riggs character was written out after only a few programs had aired, leaving Markham to solve crimes all by himself.
