A madonna is an aerial skateboarding trick invented by Tony Hawk, where the heel edge of the board is grabbed near the front wheel with the front hand and the front foot is kicked off the board behind the skateboarder. This trick was named by the inventors, Tony Hawk and Lester Kasai, who were trying to create a new trick in the 1980s. They believed that in order for a trick to become popular, it needed a catchy name, so they chose "Madonna," as the singer was very popular. The trick originally involved tapping the tail of the board on the lip of the ramp as it was landed, and was only called a madonna when performed frontside, but the definition has since become more generic within the skateboarding world. The backside version of this trick was popularized by Mark "Gator" Rogowski. Mark referred to it as a "Sean Penn" (Madonna's ex-husband).
