Madison is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,005 at the 2000 census. The town, although once larger, is now completely surrounded by the much larger City of Madison.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.3 km²), of which, 3.1 square miles (8.1 km²) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.2 km²) of it (12.81%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 7,005 people, 3,152 households, and 1,241 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,238.0 people per square mile (864.1/km²). There were 3,466 housing units at an average density of 1,107.3/sq mi (427.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 62.01% White, 15.53% Black or African American, 0.87% Native American, 4.68% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 11.91% from other races, and 4.94% from two or more races. 20.77% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 3,152 households out of which 20.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 22.7% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 60.6% were non-families. 41.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 3.03. In the town the population was spread out with 18.7% under the age of 18, 22.7% from 18 to 24, 38.9% from 25 to 44, 15.1% from 45 to 64, and 4.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 119.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 121.1 males. The median income for a household in the town was $29,766, and the median income for a family was $37,518. Males had a median income of $27,130 versus $22,401 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,738. About 20.5% of families and 23.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 35.2% of those under age 18 and 5.4% of those age 65 or over.
