Madeleine Wickham is a bestselling British author under her pseudonym, Sophie Kinsella. Educated at New College, Oxford, she worked as a financial journalist before turning to fiction. She is best known for writing a popular series of chick-lit novels. The Shopaholic novels series focuses on the misadventures of Becky Bloomwood, a financial journalist who cannot manage her own finances. The books follow her life from when her credit card debt first become overwhelming ("Confessions of a Shopaholic") to the latest book on being married and having a child ("Shopaholic & Baby"). Throughout the entire series, her obsession with shopping and the complications that it imparts on her life are central themes. The first book about Becky Bloomwood will be released as a film from Disney studios in 2008, with Isla Fischer playing Becky. The film will be set in New York, rather than London, where the book is set.

Personal life

Wickham resides in London with her husband Henry, headmaster of Lockers Park Prep School, and three young sons; Freddy, Hugo and Oscar. Her sister, Gemma Townley, is also an author. She just completed a tour in Canada and the United States with the release of her new novel, Shopaholic and Baby (2007).

Miscellaneous

In May 2006, Kaavya Viswanathan's book "How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life" was discovered to have at least three striking similarities to Kinsella's "Can you Keep a Secret?".
