Lưu is the Vietnamese transliteration of the Chinese surname Liu (劉). Liu is the fourth most common surname in China. Luu ancestors emigrated from China to Vietnam beginning in the 18th century. Some of these ancestors landed in Vinh Long. In Vietnam, Chinese names are often transliterated into Sino-Vietnamese thus explaining why the surname is spelt differently from mainland China. Most of the emigrants were Cantonese or Hokkien and therefore many Luu descendents speak Cantonese. Although ethnically Chinese, many Luu descendents now regard themselves as Vietnamese having being born and raised in Vietnam and therefore adopting the Vietnamese culture and language.
