Luís Eduardo Schmidt, nickname Edu, (born 10 January 1979 in Jaú, São Paulo). He is a Brazilian footballer and currently plays for Real Betis as a versatile forward. Edu holds an Italian passport, But his German surname indicate he also had German descent.

Career

São Paulo & Celta Vigo

Edu made 8 appearances for São Paulo from 1997 through to 2000. Edu then moved to Celta where he made 117 La Liga appearances and scored 25 goals. Edu was loaned to Real Betis for two years when Celta got relegated in 2004 season.

Real Betis

Edu made a huge impression during his debut season with Real Betis as his partnership with Ricardo Oliveira featured strongly in the success of the club and their Champions League qualification where he scored 11 goals in 32 league appearances. Although not having an impressive second season Edu score an immensely important goal against AS Monaco in the Champions League qualifying round. The goal was the difference in a 3-2 aggregate win for Betis. After two seasons on loan at Real Betis, Edu was officially signed for €2,000,000 in 2006. On the final day of the 2006/2007 La Liga season, Edu scored two goals for Real Betis in the final 10 minutes in a 2-0 win against Racing Santander. Anything but a win would have meant certain relegation for the Andalusian club. Edu is contracted to the club until 2009. He has a minimum fee release clause of €30,000,000.

International

Edu made his debut against Australia on 17 November 1999. It was his first and only appearance for Brazil.

Family

Edu is the cousin of former Real Madrid player Sávio. He is also Liverpool's defender Fábio Aurélio brother-in-law.
