Lorenzo Sabbatini (1530 - 1577) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance.

Biography

Sabbatini was born in Bologna. Nicknamed Lorenzino da Bologna, studied with Prospero Fontana, who was his teacher and collaborator. His style was also influenced by Giorgio Vasari and the Emilian mannerism by the Parmigianino. He visited Rome during Gregory XIII's (1502-1585) pontificate and was acquainted with Raphael's school of painting, which he tried to imitate, to such extent that many people thought that he was one of his disciples. Afterward, he was hired by the Vatican to execute a number of paintings adorning the walls of the Cappella Paolina (with Federico Zuccari) and in the Sala Regia, where he performed his most famous painting, The Triumph of Faith over Infidelity. Due to his successes and the Pope's satisfaction with this and other works, he was appointed superintendent of the decorations of the Vatican. Returning to Bologna, between 1566 and 1573, he was in great demand to decorate the walls of several churches there, such as Santa Maria delle Grazie, Chiesa della Morte, San Martino Maggiore, and San Giacomo. The engraver Giulio di Antonio Bonasone and the Dutch painter Denis Calvaert were his disciples. Sabbatini died in Rome in 1577.
