It is famous as the location where the Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed the summit of the Bitteroot Range via the Lolo Trail on the outward and return journeys in 1805-06. U.S. Highway 12 crosses the pass, belatedly completed in the early 1960s. Lolo Hot Springs is 7 miles east of the pass. The first services in Idaho are in Lowell, 77 miles (123 km) to the west.
