  1. ^ Because of the difficult of having open official communications with the Church in the People's Republic of China, this figure does not include Catholics living in that country, who are estimated to be 4.6 million or 12 million. Some writers assume that the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, a division of the Government's Religious Affairs Bureau, is a Church out of communion with the Bishop of Rome. The view of the Roman Catholic Church itself, as expressed, for instance, in Pope Benedict XVI's letter of 27 May 2007, is that only a "very small number" of the Catholic Bishops in mainland China are personally out of communion with the Pope and that they do not constitute a separate Church. The same view is held regarding the members and adherents of the Society of St. Pius X, who are included in the official statistics. This society explicitly claims to be in communion with the Pope and not to constitute a separate Church.
